Rampage Forces Second OT in Home Opening Weekend
ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, November 30, 2008 ... Sleet and snow didn't stop the Rockford Rampage or their fans from coming out to force the second sudden death overtime in as many games during the team's Home Opening weekend against Monterrey (Mexico) La RaZa. However, the Rampage faired better this evening than on Friday night recording its FIRST win in National Indoor Soccer League (NISL) play.
Monterrey was first to light up the scoreboard again tonight recording their first goal with just 2:50 left on the clock in the first period. Victor Quiroz (#8) found the back of the net on an assist from teammate Byron Alvarez (#23) to put La RaZa up 2-0. Even though the first period saw both teams being awarded Power Play situations, neither capitalized and the score at the end of one quarter remained 2-0 Monterrey.
During the second period Monterrey had an opportunity to score during another Power Play awarded after a tripping penalty was assessed against the Rampage's Tijani Ayegbusi (#14); his second tripping penalty of the evening. The score remained unchanged until the third quarter when La RaZa scored with 11:48 left on the clock on an unassisted goal by Carlos Barbosa (#16). However, the Rampage answered quickly with a goal of its own scored just seconds later at the 11:19 mark by Fred Degand (#13) on an assist from Dino Delevski (#21). La RaZa ended the quarter with two more goals scored at the 7:58 mark unassisted by Mariano Bollella and at :54.7 by Byron Alvarez (#23) on an assist from his goalkeeper, Jose Bontii (#1) ending the quarter with an 8-2 Monterrey lead.
Although the third period ended with a Power Play advantage for the Rampage that carried over to the fourth quarter, they were unable to find the back of the net until 9:29 when Semir Mesanovic (#7) scored a 3 point goal to bring the Rampage within 3 points of Monterrey. With 4:23 left in regulation play, Rockford's Ibrahim Kante (#3) scored a three to tie it up 8 all and eventually force the team's second sudden death overtime this weekend.
Having lost in sudden death OT on Friday night, the Rampage was NOT to be denied tonight. Rockford's Matt Stewart (#11) scored the game winner with 10:20 left in the OT period giving the Rampage their FIRST win in their new league (NISL).
The Rampage take on former MISL Champion Baltimore Blast this Saturday, December 6th at 7:05pm at the MetroCentre. The first 300 fans will receive a Rockford Rampage cap.
