Rampage falls 51-43 to Storm

February 3, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Grand Rapids Rampage News Release

The Grand Rapids Rampage took a 36-35 lead into the fourth quarter against the Tampa Bay Storm. However, just five seconds into the final stanza the Storm took the lead and never relinquished it on Ernest Certain's sack for a safety of Rampage quarterback Jose Davis. Tampa Bay scored on the ensuing drive from the "free" kick from the safety and again after the Rampage turned the ball over on downs (a Rampage TD was nullified by a holding penalty on the drive). Grand Rapids scored the game's final points when Davis connected with Anthony Hines with less than a minute to go. Peter Martinez's onside kick attempted sailed out-of-bounds and Tampa Bay ran out the clock to beat the Rampage 51-43.

Jose Davis completed 20-of-34 for 202 yards with four TDs and no interceptions, posting a 105.27 rating. For the Storm, Shane Stafford was named Offensive Player of the Game after completing 26-of-37 for 271 yards with four passing scores, two rushing scores and an interception.

The Rampage opened the game's scoring after a 50-yard kickoff return by Timon Marshall set up a Peter Martinez 18-yard field goal. Tampa Bay scored two times before Martinez hit the second of three field goals. After a defensive stop, Davis hit Aaron Bailey on a 28-yard touchdown to close within one (14-13). The Storm added a touchdown and Martinez hit his third three pointer of the night with 21 seconds left in the half.

Grand Rapids' defense forced two turnovers - both of which resulted in touchdowns. The first occured following the third Martinez field goal when Josh Bush picked up a loose ball off the ensuing kickoff and scooted in from five-yards out to give the Rampage a 22-21 lead at halftime.

Marvin Taylor registered his first interception of the season on the Storm's first possession of the third quarter and four plays later Bush was on the receiving end of a 23-yard strike from Davis to extend Grand Rapids' lead to eight (29-21). Bush, who was named Ironman of the Game, had a career-high 8.5 tackles, the net recovery for a score, caught three passes for 48 yards and a receiving score. He also posted two kickoff returns for 38 yards.

Last week at Columbus, the Rampage turned the ball over five times. This week, Grand Rapids did not put the ball on the carpet, but was forced to attempt four field goals (three good) and was just one-of-eight on third-down conversions.

The Rampage continues a three-game home stand next Sunday, February 12 when the Los Angeles Avengers come to Centennial Wireless Field for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
