Rockford Rampage News Release
Rockford, IL, January 11, 2009- For the first time this season the Baltimore Blast (5-1) tasted defeat. The shorthanded Rampage (4-3) playing without its top 2 scorers in Matthew Stewart and Dino Delevski; as well as Jamar Beasley soundly defeated the Blast 14-6 Sunday at the MetroCentre. The Rampage received 2 goals from newcomer but indoor soccer veteran Gary Brooks, 2 goals from Enrique Tovar, and single tallies from Novi Marojevic and Bato Radoncic. Rampage goalkeeper Sanaldo out dueled NISL leading goalkeeper Sagu and stopped a shootout attempt late in the game, which would have tied the score.
The first quarter opened with both teams trading chances and it wasn't until the 5:30 mark that newcomer Gary Brooks would light the lamp for the Rampage giving the home side a 2-0 advantage. Blast forward Machel Millwood would answer almost immediately with a goal of his own at 5:46 to tie the game at 2. Brooks would show off his blinding speed later in the quarter and was pulled down by Blast defender P.J. Wakefield in the penalty area to set up a penalty kick, which was converted by Novi at 9:44 for a 4-2 Rampage lead after one quarter.
The second quarter opened with the Rampage looking to add to its lead but Sagu was up to the task. Sanaldo would be called for a handball outside the box at 4:19, which set up a shoot out attempt and goal for Blast forward Giuliano Celenza to knot up the score at 4. Gary Brooks served as the Rampage goalkeeper on the play as Sanaldo had to serve his own penalty.
The third quarter seen just one goal as both sides settled in defensively as Enrique Tovar would score his first of the night off of a deflection after a shot from Brooks at 3:28 for a 6-4 Rampage lead. Brooks would add his second of the night at the 7:34 mark of quarter number four off of a pass from Novi. The Rampage was awarded a shootout attempt when Blast Defender Billy Nelson took down Jorge Valle just outside of the Blast penalty area on a partial breakaway by Valle. Novi would take the shootout but by design would wait for Brooks to catch up to the play and pass the ball to Brooks for an easy tap in past the bewildered Sagu to an 8-4 lead.
Scott Buete would pull the Blast back to within two when he converted a Millwood pass for his second goal of the season. Things looked grim for the Rampage at the 11:22 mark when Kante would take down Blast forward Carlos Garcia from behind. The referee awarded the Blast a shootout attempt for the tie. Sanaldo would stone Celenza who already was 1 for 1 on shootout attempts tonight much to the delight of the crowd to keep the score at 8-6.
The Blast would insert Mike Lookingland as the sixth attacker with just under 2 minutes to go in the game, with 1:25 to go in the game Sanaldo used his catlike reflexes to rob Millwood of a game-tying goal. Tovar would put the final nail in the Blast's coffin with an empty net 3-point goal at 13:48 and Bato Radoncic would add salt to the Blast's wounds with a 3 pointer of his own at 14:36 for a 14-6 Rampage victory.
Next the Rampage head south of the border as the tangle with Monterrey La Raza for 2 games the first scheduled for Thursday at 5:05p.m. and Sunday at 5:05 p.m.
