Rainmen Win Third Straight

(HALIFAX, NS) On Friday night the Halifax Rainmen beat the Montreal Jazz 122-113 in Montreal. The Rainmen have now won 3 straight games during the most crucial stretch of their season and improved to 16-15 on the season, 2nd in the Atlantic Conference and 4th in the NBL Canada.

The Rainmen got off to a hot start leading 32-12 after the first quarter and took a 63-46 lead into halftime. The Rainmen shot 54% in the first half, led by Joey Haywood with 13 points and their newest addition Akeem Wright with 11 points in his first appearance off the Rainmen bench. The Jazz were led by 13 points by former Rainmen point guard Chris Hagan.

The Jazz outscored the Rainmen 38-27 in the third quarter and the Rainmen led by just 6 points at the end of the third quarter, 90-84. In the fourth quarter the Rainmen outscored the Jazz 32-29 and Tyrone Levett's late fastbreak dunk helped the Rainmen hold on for a 122-113 victory.

The Rainmen shot 55% from the field and outrebounded the Jazz 69-44 on their way to the win. The Rainmen were led by new addition Akeem Wright, who stuffed the stat sheet in his first game with the team, coming off the bench to score 23 points and adding 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals in just over 26 minutes. Three Rainmen starters finished in double figures as Joey Haywood had 20 points, Melvin Goins had 15 and 9 rebounds and Quinnel Brown added 13 points.

The Jazz were led by a pair of former Rainmen, point guard Chris Hagan who scored 23 of his game high 36 points in the second half, and forward Eric Frederick who had 28 points and 9 rebounds. Also chipping in for the Jazz were forward JR Harrison who had a 16 point, 10 rebound double-double, guard Courtland Bluford with 12 and centre Jonas Pierre who had 11 points and 5 blocked shots.

The Rainmen will now travel to Moncton to take on the 15-20 Miracles before returning to Halifax for a Sunday afternoon showdown with Atlantic division rivals the Saint John Mill Rats, who at 15-16 sit two games back of the Rainmen in the playoff picture with 9 games to play.
