Reno, NV - The Tacoma Rainiers (19-34) split their six-game set with the Reno Aces (29-25) this past week at Greater Nevada Field, dropping their third straight on Sunday by a 6-5 final. The heartbreaker was the third one-run game of the series, with Tacoma going 2-1 in such contests.
The Aces took the first lead in the second inning on a Camden Duzenack RBI groundout, which scored Seth Beer after he began the frame with a single. It was 3-0 Reno after a three-run third; Dominic Fletcher hit a sac fly before catcher Carson Kelly (3-for-4) - on a rehab assignment from the Arizona Diamondbacks, lifted a solo shot to right-center.
Tacoma broke up the shutout in the sixth, when Justin Upton homered to the opposite field (solo), his first of the season in his fourth game since joining the Rainiers. But Reno quickly regained the run in the home half of the inning on Dominic Canzone's fifth homer, the second Aces solo shot of the day for a 4-1 lead.
Trailing by that same score in the eighth, the Rainiers erupted for four runs after there were two out and nobody on base. The rally started with a Forrest Wall double to center, and he scored on a Jarred Kelenic RBI single. Kelenic (2-for-4) extended Tacoma's longest hit streak this season to 11 games on Sunday. After a pitching change, Kelenic would score on Upton's second extra-base hit of the day, a hard line drive double into center. A batter later, Brian O'Keefe launched his fourth homer to the left field alley, a two-run shot that put the Rainiers ahead 5-4; the Tacoma catcher has now reached base safely in 21 of 22 games.
Reno starter Tommy Henry retired the Rainiers in order in four separate frames, and the lefty logged 7.2 IP: 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. On a bullpen day for Tacoma, right-handers Riley O'Brien (2.0 IP), Matt Koch (1.0 IP) and Matt Brash (1.0 IP) each worked a scoreless outing.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Aces loaded the bases with one out via walk, hit-by-pitch and single. The ensuing Canzone base hit to right scored two, giving Reno the walk-off win.
The Rainiers are off on Monday, before beginning a three-game series at Salt Lake on Tuesday, which will conclude this nine-game road trip. LHP Justus Sheffield will start for Tacoma, against fellow southpaw Kenny Rosenberg for Salt Lake. First pitch will be at 5:35 PT on Tuesday.
