New England Riptide News Release
Rain halted the second game in a series of four between the New England Riptide and the Chinese National Team Thursday night, July 20.
The game was in the top of the seventh inning and was tied at 2 when the rain forced it to end.
KJ Kelley helped put the Riptide on the board early in the game. Kristin Vesely leadoff in the bottom of the first with a hit to shortstop Tan Ying. An error on the throw by Ying allowed Vesely to reach safely. Vesely stole second giving New England a runner in scoring position. Lindy Winkler was next to the plate, reaching safely and advancing Vesely to third with a base hit over the head of second baseman Zhou Yi. Kelley earned the RBI singling under the glove of Ying to score Vesely giving the Riptide an early 1-0 lead. Both Winkler and Kelley advanced on the play but New England could not increase their lead as pitcher Yu Yanhong and the Team China defense put an end to the Riptide rally.
Team China was sparked offensively capturing the lead in the top of the fourth. Team China got to Riptide pitcher Erica Beach for four consecutive hits. Li Chunxia leadoff with a single and advanced to second on a base hit by Wu Di. Li Yi singled loading the bases for China. Zhang Ai hit into a fielders choice that scored Chunxia and got her aboard safely tying the score 1-1. With one out in the inning Yanhong hit to Lisa Iancin at second. Yanhong was thrown out at first but drove Di home putting Team China on top 2-1. Beach quickly put an end to the China rally striking out Ding Hong to end the inning.
A big hit Iancin cut the Team China lead to tie the score in the bottom of the fourth. Jen Scavone doubled down the right field line with one out in the inning to put the tying run on for New England. Iancin was next to the plate placing the ball just short of the centerfield wall for a triple that scored Scavone tying the game at 2.
The skies opened up part way through the top of the seventh inning. The weather halted the game in a 2-2 tie. The halted game will be finished before game three between the Riptide and Team China tomorrow, Friday July 21 at 7:05 pm.
