Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN - A busy off season continues for the Gary South Shore RailCats as the club announced today the completion of a deal that will send outfielder Jonathan Jones to New Britain in the Atlantic League for future considerations. The trade marks the first business exchange between the RailCats and the New Britain Bees. The Bees are the newest member of the independent Atlantic League and begin play in 2016. The city in Connecticut had been home to the affiliated AA Eastern League until that run ended after the 2015 season.
Jonathan Jones spent all of 2015 with the RailCats following five seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays organization. The California product hit a team leading .314 in his first taste of "indy" ball and tied for the team lead in homeruns (5) and was second on the club with 40 RBIs. In 81 games he added 19 stolen bases to lead the club and his .372 on base percentage was also a club high. Jones played 73 games in center field for the RailCats but was slowed late in the season with a nagging hamstring issue that forced him to be placed on the disabled list from August 8th until August 14th.
Jones was drafted in the 29th round of the 2010 draft by Toronto out of Long Beach State. Jones progressively made his way up the Blue Jays system before sticking at AA New Hampshire in 2014 before his release in October of 2014. In 2012, Jones appeared in eight games for the Canberra Cavalry of the Australian Baseball League. He had eight hits in 31 at-bats, including one home run and two RBI.
2016 will mark the 15th season of RailCats Baseball in Northwest Indiana. Opening Day for the RailCats' on the South Shore is Friday, May 27th against the Joplin Blasters.
