Raider Surges Quiet The Hammers

April 10, 2011 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Richmond Raiders News Release

(RICHMOND) The Richmond Raiders added blue to their uniform during the offseason. They also added "Redd" to their roster. Both additions seem to have worked out very well. Veteran Wide Receiver Damon "Redd" Thompson consistently glided through the Alabama Hammers' secondary to lead Richmond to a 54-29 victory. The Raiders are now 3-1 in the SIFL; tying them for first in the divisional and conference races.

Thompson (Highland Springs / VSU) caught 9 passes for 139 yards and 3 touchdowns; all in the first half. He helped provide the majority of the team's offense as the Raiders surged to an early 23-6 lead. Reserve QB Robbie Jenkins (Caroline HS / Bridgewater) relieved injured starter Aaron Alexander (Henrico HS / Michigan State) and gave the Raiders an extra boost just as the Hammers had closed the gap to 23-16 in the third quarter. Jenkins finished the game 7 for 11 for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns. Alexander threw for 176 yards completing 12 of 19 passes and 3 touchdowns against an Alabama pass rush in the first half that was fierce at times. He was intercepted twice.

The Raiders defense stepped up in the third quarter to limit Alabama to a lone field goal. The league leaders in sacks added four to their total with Alan Michael Cash (Varina / NC State) leading the way with 1.5. Michael Woodhouse blocked a field goal and recovered a fumble forced by Lawrence Lewis (VT) in the end zone that gave the Raiders their first defensive touchdown of the season. Larry Williams (Highland Springs / WVU) paced the secondary with 2 pass break ups and an interception in the second quarter deep in Raider territory that stopped a Hammers touchdown drive.

The Raiders produced 264 yards with their 41 plays. Herb Jones (VUU) continued his strong play adding 6 catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. Antwun Williams (Prince George HS /VSU) balanced off the receiving corps with a touchdown among his 4 catches for 64 yards.

The Richmond Raiders continue their 2011 SIFL schedule with a home game with the Fayetteville Force (3-1) April 16 at 7 pm. It is College Night sponsored by VCU.Tickets can be purchased by calling the Raider Ticket Hotline at 804-780-0430 or at ticketmaster.com.
