February 1, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
RiverCity Rage News Release
(Saint Louis, MO, February 1, 2006)"We're pleased to have the RiverCity Rage become part of the excitement of the downtown St. Louis Sports scene. The fast paced action of indoor football will have fans on their feet this spring, and I've got to believe this place will really be rocking with fans of all ages who will embrace the NIFL and all that's part of an evening of football and fun with our new tenants. Welcome to Savvis Center!"
That opening statement from Savvis Sr. VP and General Manager Dennis Petrullo made it official. The Rage are heading downtown! At a press conference on Tuesday, Rage Majority Owners, NIFL President Carolyn Shiver, coaches, front office personnel, and team sponsors were all on hand to unveil the 2006 RiverCity Rage home schedule, calling for 7 regular season games beginning with the home opener on Sunday March 26th at 3pm.
With a vast number of local media on hand, Rage Majority Owner Tye Elliott took the podium to address the gathering and offered a challenge to football fans in the Gateway City. "You've got to see this game in person. The action is as high paced and as back and forth as a basketball game. The average score from both teams at the end of one of our games usually breaks down to two points per minute, and it's affordable. You can see our entire seven game home schedule for the price of two or three tickets to other pro teams here in St. Louis."
His partner, Majority Owner Scott Wilson, told of his fondness for charitable causes and ways in which the Rage offered help to those in need. "Last season we teamed up with a number of charities to lend the Rage name and our support to those in need, and it was gratifying to be able to offer assistance in some small way. That for me, is one of the joys of owning a team, to be able to give back to the community, and I see our visibility as a sports team increasing with our move to Savvis. I'm sure that will allow us to become even more involved as the season progresses."
Wilson is encouraged by the response of the business community as well. "We've seen our corporate sponsorship increase dramatically in the last 6 months. That's due to a number of factors, not the least of which is this move downtown. Becoming part of the Savvis Center and increasing our fan base in St. Louis has added to the awareness of this football team."
NIFL League President Carolyn Shiver attended the press conference and told of the growth of both the sport and the league all across America. "Expansion has been the focal point of our league, not only in 2006 but with additional teams ready to come on board for 2007 as well. We're in the larger markets like St. Louis and in medium markets from Washington to Florida, and the ultimate goal is to make this league the one that will launch international play by the end of the decade. Germany, Canada, England and others are being scouted for cities ready to make indoor football a world wide sport. As for here in St. Louis, the challenge of the Savvis Center for both the Rage and the entire National Indoor Football League is one that is accepted and will be given the attention it deserves. It's a huge plus for a high-profile franchise."
The River City Rage of the NIFL will open the 2006 season on the road the weekend of March 16th. The first home game at Savvis Center is slated for Sunday, March 26th at 3pm. All other Rage home games will be played on Friday night. The remainder of the home schedule at Savvis is as follows: Friday, April 14; Friday, April 28; Friday, May 5; Friday, May 26; Friday, June 9; Friday, June 23;
All Friday night home games have a 7pm Kick-Off. Rage home opponents will be announced.
