Laredo Law News Release

LAREDO, Texas – The arenafootball2 league office announced today that Laredo Law defensive specialist Traco Rachal has been selected as the af2 ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts this past weekend. The Law closes the 2004 regular season on the road this Saturday night in Tulsa. For more information go on line at www.laredolaw.com.

Rachal, from Texas A&M-Commerce, is in his first season in af2. He had an impressive performance in spite of Laredo's 49-34 loss to Wichita on Saturday night at the LEC. Rachal finished with two interceptions that he returned for 31 yards, an additional pass defended, a blocked field goal and 2.0 tackles.

Rachal is currently tied for first in af2 with nine interceptions on the season and is seventh with 72.5 tackles.

"Traco is very deserving of the award," said Law head coach Scot Maynard. "He works very hard, and comes to play. Lately he has been playing in a lot of pain. We have challenged our secondary to play better and he definitely stepped it up on Saturday."

Rachal's first interception came in the first quarter to set up a Laredo touchdown to tie the game at seven.

His second interception came in the second quarter after Laredo had just tied the game at 21-21. On the last play of the first half Rachal broke through the line and blocked a Wichita field goal attempt.

"It is an honor," said Rachal. "An award like this has to do with how well the whole defense played. The guys covered well and that gave me the chance to make a play on the ball. I really feel it is a team award."

While Laredo eventually fell to the Stealth, Rachal's play kept the Law in a game in which they were playing with two quarterbacks taking their first af2 snaps. The Law defense allowed just 35 points despite the Law offense committing nine turnovers. This is not only Rachal's first-ever weekly award, it is the Law's first weekly award in team history.
