AKRON, OH - As the Racers continue their march towards their 15th Season of Play in 2016, the next stop on our trip through history is former power-hitting designated player and 2012 NPF Offensive Player of the Year, Sam Marder.

"I watched Sam for four years develop into one of the best offensive threats in the Big Ten every year," remembered GM Joey Arrietta. "I think I was more excited than Sam was when she won the league's offensive award. It was a personal highlight to see a player who had attended Ohio State win this award."

Marder came to the Racers from The Ohio State University with Akron's top pick in the 2010 draft, a second round selection at seventh overall. Marder made her debut, after sitting out the 2010 season with a nagging shoulder injury, to return to the diamond in 2011.

However, it was a year later when Marder's impact would be truly felt. After a strong rookie season, Marder was named the NPF Offensive Player of the Year, the fourth time a Racer won that honor. In 2012, Marder led Akron with a .343 average on 36 hits, including eight home runs and drove in a team-high 27 RBI. She also led the Racers with a .600 slugging percentage and a .493 on-base percentage. That season Marder was chosen to her second straight All-NPF Team.

In her rookie season, the year prior, Marder was also All-NPF while finishing second in the league in hitting with a .403 average. Marder also led Akron with a .688 slugging percentage and a .483 on base percentage and seven home runs, helping the Racers to a second place finish in the NPF that season.

Marder ranks fifth on the all-time Racers leaderboard with 21 home runs. She is third with a .569 slugging percentage and fourth with a .443 on base percentage. Marder also finished her career fifth in walks with 60. Marder had a career .324 batting average with 91 hits, plated 70 base runners, scored 31 runs and had six doubles. Marder also split her time early in her career between designated player and catcher. As a catcher, Marder held a career .980 fielding percentage.

Marder and the other 29 IMPACT honorees will take part in a celebration of the Racers 15th Season of Play this summer July 15-17. Many former players, coaches and umpires will be in town for the celebration, in addition to the IMPACT honorees, who will all take part in a special celebration on July 16 before Akron hosts the Dallas Charge at Firestone Stadium.
