Akron Racers News Release
Akron, OHâ The Akron Racers completed a day-night doubleheader sweep over the California Sunbirds with an 11-2 victory in game two. The Racers scored six unanswered runs in the bottom of the fifth to give them their sixth straight win and keep them in first place in National Pro Fastpitch league standings with a 17-7 record.
Akron fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, but fought back with a four-run third to give them a lead that they would keep all game. Center fielder Iyhia McMichael started the rally with an infield single and touched home as catcher Dana Degen blasted an RBI double to deep right-center field to knot the score at one. Degen's second double of the season was named the Summa Health Care System Play of the Game.
The Racers added three more in the inning with help from right fielder Trena Peel's RBI single and shortstop Kristin Johnson's run-scoring double. Johnson went two-for-four with the RBI double and two runs scored, to be named the Custom Sports Imprints Player of the Game.
The Racers allowed one more run in the top half of the fifth but answered with six runs in their side of the frame. Akron native Tracee McCoy knocked a pinch-hit single to drive in two runs and scored on Antionette Armstrong's single to left. First baseman Nicole Trimboli drove in two runs of her own with a hot single to center to score Armstrong and second baseman Brandi Stuart. Trimboli finished the game with two hits in four at-bats with two RBIs and a run scored while Stuart also posted two hits, driving in one and scoring a run.
In the pitcher's circle, Radara McHugh earned her team-leading sixth win in a complete game, giving up only two runs in five hits with five strikeouts. McHugh improves her record to a perfect 6-0 with a 1.88 ERA on the year.
