
Racers dominate Sunbirds with 9-1 victory in game one

AKRON, Ohio â July 5, 2004 â The Akron Racers scored early and often as they defeated the California Sunbirds 9-1 on Monday afternoon at Firestone Stadium. Right fielder Trena Peel led the way, going two-for-two with three RBIs and a triple in Akron's 16th win of the season.
The Racers wasted no time getting to California starter Jaime Foutch, touching the pitcher for one unearned run in the top of the seventh. Left fielder Antionette Armstrong reached on an error before stealing her seventh base of the season with a swipe of second. Armstrong came in to score the game's first run as center fielder Iyhia McMichael belted a double down the left field line.
Akron added a pair or runs in the second inning as Peel singled to center with her first RBI of the game to score catcher Jenn Poore. Second baseman Brandi Stuart brought in the third run of the game with a sacrifice fly, scoring shortstop Kristin Johnson. Stuart had two RBIs in the game while Johnson went one-for-four with three runs scored and two stolen bases.
The Racers posted three more runs in the third with the help of Peel's Summa Health Care Play of the Game, a two-RBI triple, which scored Johnson and Poore. First baseman Nicole Trimboli drove in the first Akron run of the inning with an RBI single to bring home McMichael who had reached on her second double of the day. Trimboli went two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.
Akron tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning with singles by designated player Heather Wright and Trimboli. Poore, who was two-for-two with two runs scored on the game, also added an RBI with her third double of the season.
Pitcher Danielle Henderson worked the complete game for the Racers, holding the Sunbirds scoreless until the seventh inning. Henderson allowed just the one run on three hits while striking out nine to earn her fourth victory of the season. Henderson was named the Custom Sports Imprints Player of the Game.
The Racers go for the doubleheader sweep of the Sunbirds as the two teams meet again tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Firestone Stadium.
