Racers roll past Riptide, 6-1, in first home victory

June 6, 2004 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) - Akron Racers News Release

AKRON, Ohio – June 6, 2004 – An offensive explosion sparked the Akron Racers to their first home victory of the season, as they defeated the New England Riptide 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Firestone Stadium. The Racers were led by right fielder Trena Peel, whose ringing triple in the fourth gave the Racers an insurmountable lead.

Second baseman Brandi Stuart was the first Racer to reach base, when she led off the fourth inning with a walk. With one on and nobody out, Peel sent the Racers’ first triple of the season to deep left field, scoring Stuart. The speedy Peel followed Stuart home on an errant throw by New England's Ashley Moore.

The Riptide responded in the top half of the sixth when Tara Knudsen drew a lead-off walk, and advanced on a single and a fielder’s choice. Knudsen scored from third on a Moore sacrifice fly to set the game at 2-1 in favor of Akron.

Akron got the run back and more in their half of the inning, as pinch-hitter Antionette Armstrong legged out an infield single, and showed her speed again by swiping both second and third. After Peel walked, centerfielder Iyhia McMichael loaded the bases by drawing an intentional pass.

With a chance for a big inning, catcher Jenn Poore came through with a clutch single into right field, scoring Armstrong and Peel. Refusing to cool their hot bats, the Racers’ pitcher Nikki Myers sent a single through the middle of the infield to bring in Poore and McMichael, giving the Racers the 6-1 victory.

Myers also pitched a complete game for Akron, striking out four and allowing one run on six hits for her first professional win.

The Racers look for their first series victory of the season when they take on the Riptide in the rubbermatch on Monday, June 7, at 7:05 p.m. at Firestone Stadium.
