Akron Drops Home Opener to Riptide
June 6, 2004 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF)
Akron Racers News Release
AKRON, Ohio â The Akron Racers, members of the six team National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league, scored first in their 2004 home opener at Firestone Stadium, but lost the lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Centerfielder, Iyhia McMichael got the Racers going in the bottom of the fourth, leading off the frame with her second single of the night. With one down in the inning, designated player Jenn Poore sent a hard single down the left field line to score McMichael from third.
The Riptide responded in the sixth, scoring two runs on two errors, which both came with two outs. Tara Knudsen scored New England's first run, having reached when she was struck by a pitch. Rachael McGinnis scored the game-winner on a Lyndsey Angus infield single.
Akron previously worked out of a jam in the fifth with some fantastic defense from catcher Dana Degen who followed a pick-off by gunning down a runner attempting to steal second.
Offensively, the Racers were led by third baseman, Lindsay Wood, who went two-for-three with a double and a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh. Wood also made a spectacular defensive play to end the Riptide threat in the sixth.
In her second start of the season, Brandee McArthur worked her second complete game in the pitcher's circle for the Racers, striking out four while scattering seven hits. McArthur did not allow an earned run, but was tagged with the loss to even her record at 1-1.
For the Riptide, Jocelyn Forest worked three innings in relief of starter Megan Matthews to pick up the win.
The Racers look to even the series record against the Riptide on Sunday, June 6 at 1:05 p.m. at Firestone Stadium.
