Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(Reading, PA) - 2006 National League MVP Ryan Howard, 2008 World Series MVP Cole Hamels, and 2009 Gold Glove award-winner Michael Bourn headline the candidates for the R-Phils All-Decade Team, a weekly list which fans will be able to vote on at the team's website, as announced by the Reading Phillies earlier today.
Continuing each Monday, for a total of eight straight weeks, fans can vote for their favorite R-Phils from the past decade - and the final team, which will be announced on www.ReadingPhillies.com later in 2010, will be featured in a 2010 photo and t-shirt giveaway at FirstEnergy Stadium during the upcoming 2010 season. Every Monday, a new group of players, categorized by position, will be announced.
"Over the past ten seasons, fans at FirstEnergy Stadium have been treated to great performances from some of today's superstars of baseball," said R-Phils GM Scott Hunsicker. "Many of these players have gone on to have successful careers in the Majors, but one thing is for certain, they all have left a mark on Reading Phillies history."
Beginning with today's group of right-handed pitchers, fans will have the opportunity to pick from the best players of the past decade by watching videos of that player during his time in Reading on www.ReadingPhillies.com. The videos consist of highlights from that player's time in an R-Phils uniform during the past ten seasons.
While the excitement of watching videos and choosing a favorite player will be nothing short of a great chance for fans to voice their opinion, each week one lucky fan will be randomly selected from that week's votes to receive four reserved seats to the August 31, 2010 Reading Phillies game, where the first 2,500 adults (15+) will receive the All-Decade Team t-shirt. There will be a total of eight weekly winners, plus a grand prize winner who will receive an R-Phils Phan Pack, which will consist of a 10 person pool party, first pitch, and a team signed baseball. The grand prize winner will be announced after the contest concludes.
Monday January 5, 2010 - Right-Handed Pitchers (Pick One)
Brandon Duckworth - was the workhorse of the 2000 R-Phils pitching staff, going 13-7 with a team-low 3.16 ERA in a team-high 165 innings. He led the league with 178 strikeouts, which still ranks him second on the R-Phils all-time K list for a single season.
Gavin Floyd - started his 2004 season with the R-Phils by tossing 17 straight scoreless innings and continued his dominance throughout the season. A post-season All-Star selection, he came within three outs of a no-hitter at New Hampshire before he was lifted on a pitch count.
Ryan Madson - turned in a brilliant performance in 2002, becoming the only Phillies pitcher in the decade to win Eastern League Pitcher of the Year. He finished 16-4 with a 3.20 ERA, 132 strikeouts and 171.1/3 innings pitched, ranking in the top three in all four categories. His 16 wins were the most by a Reading pitcher in the 2000s and are tied for the second most in R-Phils history.
Brett Myers - posted a 13-4 record with a team best 130 strikeouts and a 3.87 ERA on the 2001 R-Phils Eastern League championship team. He started strong, posting a 20-inning scoreless streak in April and ended strong, winning his last six regular season decisions.
Carlos Silva - one of the most durable R-Phils pitchers of the decade, throwing a team-high 180 innings for the '01 EL champs. He led the team in wins with 15, ranked second with a 3.90 ERA, and tossed four complete games, the most for any Reading pitcher over the last 15 seasons.
Full season and partial season ticket packages for the 2010 season presented by Pepsi, as well as tickets to the all-you-can-eat picnic buffet areas, are on sale now and can be purchased in person at FirstEnergy Stadium, by calling (610) 375-8469 or by visiting www.readingphillies.com.
