Connecticut Whale News Release
DANBURY, CT -ÃÂ The Connecticut Whale have made a major addition to their squad for 2020-21 with the signing of Quinnipiac star goaltender Abbie Ives, who had 17 wins, a 1.91 GAA and .927 save percentage last season. Ives, who signed her contract this morning, joins the previously-signed Brooke Wolejko - a standout as an NWHL rookie - to give the Whale superb goaltending for the upcoming season.
"I've spent pretty much my entire life playing hockey in this area, and I am thrilled to be able to play at the professional level now," said Ives, 21. "I'm excited to sign with the Whale and can't wait to get started!"
Ives, who was an assistant captain of the team, was named Quinnipiac's Most Valuable Player in 2019-20. The 5-11 goaltender had 42 saves in her team's 4-2 win over tenth-ranked Minnesota Duluth - Quinnipiac's first win over a top-ten opponent since the 2017-18 season. In her final collegiate game, Ives was heroic in making 47 saves in Quinnipiac's overtime loss to Princeton in the ECAC quarterfinals.
As the team's No. 1 goaltender, she started 96 games over the last three seasons. Her .926 save percentage and 14 shutouts both rank third in school history.
"We are thrilled to welcome Abbie to the Pod," said Whale assistant coach Laura Brennan. "She had an outstanding career at Quinnipiac, and we look forward to seeing her grow as a pro. Abbie and Brooke Wolejko will continue the tradition of exceptional Whale goaltending next season!"
