Metropolitan Riveters News Release
NJ/NY -ÃÂ The Metropolitan Riveters are proud to welcome Czech Republic National Team defender and former University of Vermont captain Sammy Kolowrat to the NWHL. The 23-year-old Kolowrat has signed a contract to play for the Riveters in the 2020-21 season.
"I hope to be an inspiration for younger girls to pursue professional hockey," said Kolowrat, a native of Prague. "I'd like to thank the Metropolitan Riveters for this opportunity and I can't wait to get out there for my first pro season. I'm so grateful and excited to be a part of the NWHL."
The 5-7 defender played 141 games over four seasons from 2016-2019 at Vermont, serving as captain as a senior and assistant captain in her junior year. Kolowrat was honored as team MVP in 2019, and was named to Hockey East's All-Academic Team in 2016-17.
Even before attending Vermont, Kolowrat had already begun competing for the Czech Republic National Team. At age 16, she had a goal (in a quarterfinal victory over Finland) and an assist in six games as the Czech Republic finished fourth at the 2013 IIHF World Championship in Ottawa. She later helped lead her national team to a 5-0 record to earn qualification at the 2016 IIHF World Championship in Kamloops, BC. In 2017, Kolowrat was voted Most Outstanding Defender at the IIHF Group C Olympic Qualifiers. She most recently represented her country at the 2019 IIHF World Championship.
"Sammy is a strong defender who brings a lot of international hockey experience and knows what it takes to compete against the best players," said Riveters head coach Ivo Mocek, who was raised in the Czech Republic. "She is a significant addition to the Riveters and there's no doubt in my mind she will elevate our defensive play."
