Quebec's Santos named NEL Relief Pitcher of the Year
September 9, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Durham, N.C. -- Quebec's Alex Santos was selected by the managers and members of the media as the Northeast League's Relief Pitcher of the Year on Thursday. This is the second major award a member of Les Capitales has garnered this season as Paul Jacinto was named Rookie Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday.
Santos, a six-foot-one right-hander, led the league with 22 saves, one off the league record set by Adirondack's Steve Thomas in 2000. In 31 appearances, all out of the bullpen, he went 2-1 with a 1.06 ERA and struck out 49, while walking five. Santos allowed only four runs, three of which came in one appearance, all season as teams were hitting .161 against him. His lone blown save in 23 opportunities came against New Jersey on August 14. Santos was selected as the NEL Pitcher of the Week on August 22 after recording four saves and allowing just one hit in four games.
Santos was originally selected by the Devil Rays in the fourth round of the 1999 MLB Draft. He compiled a record of 24-28 during his stint, making it as high as Double-A Orlando in 2002 and 2003. This is his first season in the NEL.
