
Quebec's Melo and Brockton's Henry earn NEL Player of the Week honors

Durham, N.C. -- Quebec's Juan Melo and Brockton's Mike Henry were selected by SportsTicker as the Northeast League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday for the period of Aug. 30 - Sept. 6. Melo is the sixth different Les Capitale to be honored, while Henry is the first member of the Rox to be selected.
In seven games last week, Melo went 15-for-25 to post a batting average of .600. Amongst those hits were two doubles and a home run resulting in a slugging percentage of .800. Melo also scored seven runs and drove in four for Quebec, which has won seven straight and captured the second half North Division crown. Melo signed with Les Capitales on July 26 after playing with Veracruz of the Mexican League from March through June. He began his professional career in 1993 when he was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the San Diego Padres. Melo made his way up to Triple-A Las Vegas in 1998 and 1999 before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. A season later, he found himself playing in the major leagues with the San Francisco Giants. In 2003, Melo played in the Mexican League and with Fargo-Morehead of the Northern League.
Henry, who was obtained in a trade-deadline deal with San Angelo of the Central Baseball League, won both his starts last week to up his NEL record to 3-0. In 16 innings of work, he allowed no runs and only seven hits, while striking out 10 and walking four. In his last start of the season on Sept. 5, he tossed a complete game two-hit shut out of Bangor to lower his earned run average to 1.93. Prior to his arrival in Brockton, Henry went 8-6 with a 4.40 ERA for the Colts. He is in his third year of professional baseball, having pitched with Richmond of the Frontier League in 2002 and 2003.
