Published on September 7, 2004 under Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Durham, N.C. - The 2004 version of the Northeast League playoffs get underway this Wednesday, September 8. The first round will feature Bangor against New Jersey and Quebec versus North Shore in a best-of-five series. The Jackals, Les Capitales and Spirit were all part of the playoffs in 2003.
North Shore and Quebec, the winners of the North Division's first and second half, respectively, will face each other in one of the semifinals. Quebec, the winners of seven in a row, went 34-12 in the second half to post the best overall league record at 58-34. North Shore, which has struggled as of late, posted the league's second best overall mark at 57-35. Quebec took the season series, 8-5, and has won the last four contests between the two teams. Recent Les Capitales additions Juan Melo, Goef Tomlinson and Rickie Morton are each hitting over .390 against the Spirit. For North Shore, Nilson Teilon is hitting .419 with five doubles, two home runs and seven RBI in 11 games against Quebec. Game one gets underway at 6:05 p.m. at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass. with Keith Dunn taking the mound for Les Capitales and Bryan Morse toeing the rubber for the Spirit.
New Jersey will host games one, two and five of its match up against Bangor by virtue of capturing the first and second half South Division titles. Games three and four will be played at the Mansfield Sports Complex instead of Winkin Field due to a scheduling conflict with Husson College football. The Jackals, who posted a 54-39 mark during the regular season, went 7-8 against the Lumberjacks this season, but won five of out eight contests at Yogi Berra Stadium. Designated hitter Scott Goodman has fared well against Bangor this season, batting .353 with 11 runs scored, four home runs and 17 RBI in 14 games. In the opposite dugout, Mark Burke hit .373 with five homers, 13 RBI and 11 runs scored versus the Jackals. Game one on Wednesday night will feature Bangor right-hander Adam Thomas against New Jersey southpaw Aaron Myers. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m in Little Falls, N.J.
