Alabama Hammers News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Signing a quarterback, a kicker and some talent at wide receiver had been at the top of Alabama Hammers coach Marty Hammond's list.
Hammond recently checked off all three by signing former University of North Alabama quarterback Harrison Beck, and fellow UNA alumni in kicker Kenny Spencer and wide receiver Rocky Coleman.
The veteran Hammers coach also got some welcome news that Alabama's Southern Indoor Football League season opener against Columbus had been rescheduled for March 19, giving the franchise a Saturday night 7:30 kickoff in the renovated Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center.
"Beck has the ability to put up big numbers like he did at UNA,'' said Hammond, whose squad opens training camp March 4. "Rocky is a physical receiver with good size and speed, and Spencer has a great leg that we'll be able to depend on.
"Getting that Saturday night date to start the season is huge in so many ways. We are looking forward to a packed house and I'm going to put the best team possible on the field."
Spencer (6-foot-1, 225 pounds) was an All-Gulf South Conference selection in 2009 after hitting on 12 of 17 field goals and converting 63 of 66 extra points. Coleman (6-3, 220) had 72 catches for the Lions from '07-'08, totaling 1,096 yards and nine touchdowns.
The much-traveled Beck (6-2, 230) played 13 games for UNA under Terry Bowden in 2009, completing 293 of 505 passes for 3,823 yards with 31 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
"It's a great opportunity for me to get back into football,'' Beck said. "Just playing in front of a great crowd and getting to throw the ball on every snap will be great. We've got some good players and I'm just looking forward to getting back out there."
Beck was one of the nation's top high school QBs in 2004 at Countyside High School in Clearwater, Fla., before signing with Nebraska. He was on his way to a redshirt season in 2005 but an injury to the starting quarterback put him on the field. He led the Cornhuskers on the game-winning drive against Kansas State and also played briefly in the final game against Colorado.
Beck then transferred to North Carolina State and sat out the 2006 season. Then despite a coaching change he stayed at N.C. State, starting four gamesand throwing for 903 yards and two touchdowns with nine interceptions. He threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns in a win over William & Mary in 2008 and started in a loss to South Florida before heading to UNA.
