Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes moved to within one victory of going to the California League Championship Series, defeating the Lake Elsinore Storm by a score of 6-1, on Monday night at The Epicenter.

Ryan Chaffee dominated in his first post-season start, while a four-run eighth inning broke open a tight game, helping the Quakes take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.

Chaffee and Storm starter Jeremy McBryde had a pretty good duel, as the game was scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth.

Gabe Jacobo put the Quakes on the board, slugging a long home run to open the inning, his second of the post-season to make it a 1-0 game.

Chaffee (1-0), who allowed just one run on two hits over seven innings, walked the lead-off man, Allan Dykstra, to open the fifth. That walk would cost him, as Dykstra moved to second on a single by Jesus Lopez. Bo Davis followed with a sac bunt, moving the runners into scoring position. Brad Chalk then grounded to shortstop Darwin Perez, scoring Dykstra to even the game at 1-1. Chaffee would get the final out of the inning and preserve the tie, getting Daniel Robertson to ground out to end the inning.

The Quakes reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning, as three straight two-out hits put them in front to stay. Mike Trout got the rally started with a single, then moved to third on an Alberto Rosario single. With runners at the corners and two away, Luis Jimenez came up clutch, ripping a single up the middle to score Trout and give the Quakes a 2-1 advantage over McBryde (0-1).

In the bottom of the eighth, the Quakes put it out of reach. Trout led off the inning with a double. Rosario followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt. On the play, third baseman Vince Belnome threw wildly to first base, allowing Trout to score to make it 3-1. With Rosario aboard, Gabe Jacobo ripped a triple to center field, driving in his second run of the night to make it a 4-1 lead. Dillon Baird put it away, as he blasted a two-run homer to right field, capping the four-run frame off of Storm reliever Hayden Beard at 6-1.

Quakes' reliever Matt Meyer took over in the ninth, replacing Jose Perez, who fanned all three men he faced in a 1-2-3 eighth. Meyer gave up a one-out double to Cody Decker and walked Belnome, before retiring the final two hitters to end the game.

The win puts the Quakes in position to advance to the California League Championship Series, if they can beat the Storm on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Game 4 in the Best-of-5 will be on Tuesday night, with the Quakes sending Manny Flores (0-0) to the mound for his second post-season start. Lake Elsinore, now facing elimination, will send right-hander Matt Lollis (0-0) to the mound in his California League debut. Game time from The Epicenter on Tuesday night is 7:05pm, with gates opening at 6:05pm.

Should the Quakes lose Tuesday's game, they'd head to Lake Elsinore on Wednesday, for a decisive Game 5. The winner of this series will travel to San Jose on Thursday, opening up the Best-of-5 California League Championship Series against the defending league champion San Jose Giants, who completed a three-game sweep of the Modesto Nuts on Monday night.

Tickets for Tuesday's playoff game at The Epicenter are available on Tuesday morning, by calling (909) 481-5000 or by stopping by The Epicenter Ticket Office. Playoff Ticket Packages are also available online at rcquakes.com.
