San Jose Giants News Release

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes defeated the San Jose Giants by a score of 4-0 on Sunday afternoon to win the rubber game of the three game series. However, the Giants inched closer to clinching the first half Northern Division title as the Modesto Nuts lost 9-7 to the Bakersfield Blaze. San Jose currently owns a record of 38-25 while the Quakes sit with a mark of 32-31.

After scoring 13 runs on Saturday, the Giants were unable to find their hitting groove in Sunday's matinee. California League strikeout leader Jose Arredondo (4-4) shut down the San Jose offense while touching 97 MPH on the radar gun with his fastball. The right hander did not surrender a run while giving up three hits in seven innings of work. Arredondo increased his strike out total to 92 on the season with seven in the game. Kevin Lynch and Joe Torres pitched the 8th and 9th innings for Rancho Cucamonga to complete the three hitter.

Giants starter Brooks McNiven lasted four innings in his second start of the 2006 season. The right hander allowed eight hits and four runs on the day. Relievers Nathan Pendley and Justin Hedrick kept San Jose in the game by throwing five shut out innings. Hedrick entered in the 8th and struck out five Quakes batters in his two innings of work.

After an off day tomorrow, the Inland Empire 66ers come into town to face the Giants in a battle of the two first place teams. Nick Pereira (7-1, 2.11) will start game one of the series. Tickets for the contest are available online at www.sjgiants.com or by calling (408) 297-1435 ext. 15.
