QMJHL Week in Review

March 21, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

The 2010-11 Lewiston MAINEiacs concluded their regular season this past weekend, and did so in style with a pair of wins away from home. The MAINEiacs destroyed the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 7-0 on Friday night, before moving on to Chicoutimi, where they knocked off the Sagueneens 3-1.

In Friday's game, it took some time for Lewiston to get things started, as Bryce Milson got the contest's first goal with 1:27 remaining in the opening stanza. However, the flood gates began to open in the second, as Etienne Brodeur, Kirill Kabanov, Sam Henley, and Sam Carrier all found the back of the net. Brodeur and Michael Chaput added goals in the third, helping Nicholas Champion to his second shutout of the season - a 25-save performance.

On Sunday, the MAINEiacs and Sagueneens exchanged goals in the first two periods, with Michael Chaput and Steve Lebel lighting the lamp. 40 seconds into the third, Lewiston pulled ahead on Pierre-Olivier Morin's tally, before Etienne Brodeur added insurance with five minutes left to play. Andrey Makarov earned the win, making 23 saves.

With the two victories, the MAINEiacs finished the 2010-11 regular season with a record of 40-24-1-3 (84 points), placing them in second in the Telus East Division and eighth overall.

Last Week in the QMJHL

The Saint John Sea Dogs tied the all-time record for the most wins in a season by a QMJHL team (58), while also finishing the season unbeaten at home in regulation (32-0-1-1). After falling 5-2 on the road against PEI on Wednesday, the Sea Dogs returned home to blast Cape Breton 8-1 on Friday and PEI 7-2 on Sunday.

The Gatineau Olympiques picked up a pair of wins last week, extending their winning streak to nine-games, as they enter postseason play. The Olympiques held off Rimouski 3-1 on Friday, before bouncing Montreal 5-2 on Sunday. Gatineau ended up winning four of the six games they played this season against the Junior.

The Acadie-Bathurst Titan also ended up in the win column twice last week, with both games taking place on the road. The Titan doubled up Halifax 4-2 on Friday, before spanking Moncton 7-1 on Sunday.

The Chicoutimi Sagueneens limped into the playoffs, losing each of their final seven games, including two last weekend, as they fell to 13th place in the overall standings. The Sagueneens dropped a tough 5-4 game against rival Quebec on Friday, before a 3-1 home loss to Lewiston on Sunday. The MAINEiacs and Remparts also faced Baie-Comeau over the weekend, with Lewiston winning 7-0 on Friday, and Quebec winning 3-2 in overtime on Sunday.

The Victoriaville Tigres also had a difficult weekend, as they had a chance to finish as high as ninth in the overall standings. However, a pair of defeats put Victoriaville in 11th place overall, as the Tigres fell 3-2 against Montreal on Friday and 6-3 against Rimouski on Sunday. The win by the Oceanic propelled them past Chicoutimi and into 12th place overall.

The Drummondville Voltigeurs needed extra time in both of their games last weekend, but were able to earn three out of four possible points. Drummondville came up short in a 4-3 shootout loss to Rouyn-Noranda on Friday, but rebounded to edge Val-d'Or 3-2 in overtime on Sunday.

The Shawinigan Cataractes faced the same two opponents as Drummondville, but came away with one more point than the Voltigeurs. Shawinigan scored a combined total of 14 goals in their two victories, smoking Val-d'Or 8-4 on Friday, before a 6-4 victory over Rouyn-Noranda on Sunday.

Four other games took place in the QMJHL last week. Moncton snuck past Halifax 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday, Montreal doubled up Rimouski 4-2 on Thursday, PEI beat Moncton by that exact score on Friday, and Cape Breton won the final Battle of Nova Scotia of the season, defeating Halifax 4-2 on Sunday.
