Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - Last week, the Lewiston MAINEiacs took the ice for the final two times in the 2010 calendar year, as they faced the Victoriaville Tigres for a pair of tilts. Lewiston and Victoriaville split their two battles, with the road team coming out on top in both. The MAINEiacs smoked the Tigres 7-1 on Tuesday at Colisee Desjardins, before Victoriaville responded for a 4-1 win over Lewiston at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Thursday. Francis Beauvillier led the way for the MAINEiacs in Tuesday's victory, netting a pair of goals. Pierre-Olivier Morin also had a solid game, adding three points. On Thursday, Victoriaville's Guillaume Goulet found the back of the night twice, while Philip-Michael Devos had a three-point game. Nicholas Champion and David Honzik were the victorious netminders. The 1-1 week brings Lewiston's overall record to 25-14-0-2 (52 points), which remains good for second place in the Telus East Division, as well as sixth place overall.

Roster Update

The QMJHL's trading period now has less than one week remaining, and so far, the MAINEiacs have made a pair of deals, acquiring two players for two draft picks. Lewiston's two newcomers are forward Bryce Milson and defenseman Jonathan Parisien. Milson has one assist in two games as a MAINEiac, while Parisien will look to make his Lewiston debut on Tuesday. On the injury front, Cole Hawes and Zachary Evans-Renaud both had successful surgeries, and the two remain on their original timeframes, with Evans-Renaud expected to be out for the season, and Hawes expected to be out for 6-8 weeks. Kirill Kabanov and Andrey Makarov should both be back in the lineup this week, as they have returned from Russia, while Dillon Fournier and Christophe Lalonde could be back by the weekend from the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Last Week in the Telus East Division

The Quebec Remparts (30-7-1-2, 63 pts) continue to roll at the top of the Telus East Division, having gone undefeated in regulation in ten straight games. Quebec's lone blemish in their streak was a 4-3 overtime loss in Drummondville on Tuesday. Prior to that, the Remparts bounced Rouyn-Noranda 7-3 on Monday. After the setback, Quebec rebounded to beat Baie-Comeau 5-3. Both of the Remparts' wins were on home ice at Colisee Pepsi, where they are now 19-2-0.

The Rimouski Oceanic (21-18-1-1, 44 pts) got one of everything last week, going 1-1-1 to move into sole possession of third place in the division. All three games were decided by one goal, starting with a 3-2 regulation loss to Drummondville on Tuesday, as well as a 6-5 overtime setback to Gatineau on Wednesday. The week ended well for the Oceanic, who edged Montreal 4-3 in overtime on Thursday.

The Victoriaville Tigres (20-17-1-2, 43 pts) played one game in addition to their two with the MAINEiacs, finishing the week with a mark of 1-2. Victoriaville visited the Montreal Junior on Monday, falling 5-2. The Tigres then split their home-and-home series with Lewiston, losing 7-1 on Tuesday, before winning 4-1 on Thursday.

The Chicoutimi Sagueneens (14-18-3-4, 35 pts) righted the ship temporarily, winning five straight games. However, the Sagueneens have since dropped four straight, including three last week. Chicoutimi started the week by getting swept by Baie-Comeau, losing 5-2 on Monday and 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday. Once the Drakkar were off of the schedule, the Sagueneens welcomed Shawinigan to town, but the result was the same, as the Cataractes escaped with a 3-1 win.

The Baie-Comeau Drakkar (6-26-5-4, 21 pts) are slowly starting to make up for their woeful start, having won four of their last ten games. Two of those victories came last week, as the Drakkar swept a home-and-home series with Chicoutimi. Baie-Comeau won 5-2 at home on Monday, before disappointing the Sagueneens' home crowd with a 3-2 overtime win on Wednesday. However, all good things must come to an end, and the winning streak did just that on Thursday, as Quebec got the upper hand in a 5-3 final.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL

The Saint John Sea Dogs ran into a minor bump in the road on Thursday, when the Acadie-Bathurst Titan squeaked out a 5-4 victory at KC Irving Regional Centre. After that, the Sea Dogs took their frustration out on the Moncton Wildcats, winning 4-0 on Friday and 3-2 in overtime on Sunday. Saint John remains undefeated in regulation at home, currently owning a record of 18-0-0-1. Moncton had one other game last week, as they fell to PEI 4-1 on Thursday.

The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and Halifax Mooseheads will likely be battling it out for the remainder of the season, as the two teams are currently separated by one point. The two sides met up twice last week, with Cape Breton winning both. The Screaming Eagles doubled up the Mooseheads 4-2 on Tuesday in Sydney, before pulling off a 5-4 overtime win in Halifax on Thursday. Cape Breton is now 5-0 in the Battle of Nova Scotia this season, with two games left in February and one in March.

The Val-d'Or Foreurs have hit a wall, having lost each of their last nine contests. Two of those defeats came last week, as the Foreurs were swept by the rival Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. The Huskies edged the Foreurs 5-4 at home on Wednesday, before traveling to Val-d'Or on Thursday, where they completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory. Val-d'Or now leads the season series 3-2, with the final three games taking place in January.

Two other games took place in the QMJHL last week. On Tuesday, Shawinigan edged out Montreal 4-3 in overtime for their seventh win in their last ten games. Then, on Thursday, Gatineau doubled up Drummondville 4-2 for their sixth win in a row.
