New Orleans VooDoo News Release

NEW ORLEANS (March 19, 2012) - Late last week, intern Jake Weinstock sat down with New Orleans VooDoo defensive end Brian Coulter for this week's VooDoo Question and Answer. Coulter played college football at Missouri and is a native of New Orleans, La.

JAKE WEINSTOCK: What was your favorite sports team growing up?

BRIAN COULTER: "The Denver Broncos. I didn't really start liking football until the late '90s, and at the time, there was no one better than the Broncos. John Elway was my favorite player; I've always had such a great deal of respect for him."

JW: What was your first impression of Coach O'Hara?

BC: "To be honest, I was a bit shocked by how much swagger he has, and by his demeanor. He seemed like a coach we could really connect with, and he is."

JW: What was your greatest sports moment?

BC: "In 2009, my senior year at Missouri, we were playing our rivalry game on the road against Kansas. We were down by 3 with about 2:30 left and Kansas had the ball at their own 2. I was able to sack the quarterback in the end zone for a safety that closed the game to 39-38. We then got the ball back and went down and kicked a field goal as time expired to win 41-39."

JW: Who is your favorite athlete today?

BC: "My former teammate at Missouri and best friend; Aldon Smith. He was drafted 7th overall last year by the (San Francisco) 49ers and he had like 14 sacks this past season, as a rookie. We hung out in California together last summer, as I was out there to play for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL."

JW: Speaking of, you played for Coach Dennis Green in Sacramento, what was he like?

BC: "He's very energetic; he coaches with a lot of passion. I have the utmost respect for that man, I remember watching him coach those great Vikings' teams of the 90's. At the time, he was one of the few black head coaches in the NFL, so I really looked up to him, and still do."

JW: For you to improve as a player, you need to do what?

BC: "Keep a level head, and never think I'm above the game or above my coaches. I want to continue to try and be a sponge, and soak up as much information about the game as I possibly can."

JW: What do you feel are three characteristics a good teammate should have?

BC: "I think every teammate should be trustworthy, accountable, and willing to listen to instruction and authority."

JW: Which superhero would you most like to be and why?

BC: "Wolverine, because there's just no stopping him. He's truly unbreakable, and he carries himself in such a calm, laid back fashion, yet there's that fire in him that can cause him to erupt at any time."

JW: Do you have a favorite T.V. show and why do you like that show?

BC: "The Walking Dead on AMC. I am the absolute number one fan of that show. I've always been into scary movies, and I think that's why I really connected with the show, but that's also probably why I could never get a date to go to the movies with me (laughs)."

JW: Nobody knows how much you like to...?

BC: "Nobody knows how much I like to eat sweets. I sleep with cakes on the side of my bed (laughs). Everyone says I have such a nice smile, and if that's true, I don't know how long I'll be able to keep it with the amount of sugar I eat."

JW: What's your biggest fear?

BC: "Roaches. A roach would make me run a 4.3 (second) 40 (yard dash) in the opposite direction if I saw one."

JW: What is the one thing you'd most like to change about the world?

BC: "The violence; the unnecessary, senseless violence."

JW: What's your personal touchdown, or big play celebration?

BC: "I do nothing; absolutely nothing. Too many guys today do a little dance or jump around. That kind of stuff tires you out, so you make a big play and then are completely flat for the next five to six plays cause you're tired from the celebration."

JW: What was your greatest moment outside of sports?

BC: "Talking to my mother for the first time after Hurricane Katrina, which wasn't until four or five years after, believe it or not."

JW: What's your most valued possession?

BC: "My pocket Bible. I'm very religious and I take it with me pretty much wherever I go."

JW: What's your advice to kids?

BC: "You can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it."

JW: What do you like most about Mardi Gras?

BC: "The atmosphere; I love that so many people come together from all different walks of life to enjoy themselves and enjoy the festivities."

JW: Do you have a favorite quote or saying?

BC: "You don't work, you don't eat; you don't grind, you don't shine."

JW: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

BC: "Brazil. I hear all kinds of great stories about the beautiful things to see in Brazil and of course, about the gorgeous women there (laughs)."

JW: What was the best advice you were ever given?

BC: You can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it, work hard, and never give up."

JW: What are the top-five things on your bucket list?

BC: "Muster up enough courage to go skydiving, as well as scuba-diving. Drive a race car, go alligator hunting just like on "Swamp People", and try sushi."

JW: Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

BC: "I see myself being a father, although I'm not one yet. I think I'd make a great father, and I know I'd be a total 'sports dad' for sure."
