Pythons coach enters Miami-Ohio HOF

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Tennessee Valley Pythons coach Dick Adams will be inducted into the Miami-Ohio University Athletic Hall of Fame during ceremonies at halftime of the Miami-Ohio - Ohio men's basketball game Saturday evening in Oxford, Ohio.

Adams, 57, lettered in football at Miami-Ohio from 1968-70 and was selected first-team All-MAC defensive back and kicker in ‘69 and ‘70. Over his career he established 14 team records and tied two others, including twice intercepting seven passes in a season while playing as a second-team All-American under Bo Schembechler and Bill Mallory.

"I'm excited being able to go back and hopefully see some coaches that I played for,'' Adams said. "For me, it was just being at the right place at the right time. I had great teammates and we worked hard together - lots of great memories."

Adams was drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1971 and moved on to a standout playing and coaching career in the Canadian Football League. In 1995, Adams was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.

The 2004-2005 Hall of Fame class that also includes Deland McCullough (football, ‘96), a player Adams coached in the CFL. Other inductees are Julie Rhoda Dagiau (women's track, ‘92), Harold Fisher (men's track, ‘45), Sean Gorgone (golf, ‘91), Vicki Shields (women's tennis, ‘85) and Dr. Jim Goldey (team physician, ‘75-96).

UIF NOTES: The 12 member teams of United Indoor Football came together last weekend in Omaha, Neb., to share ideas on all aspects of sales, marketing, team operations and finalized the playoff format at the first UIF league meetings.

Eight of the league's dozen teams teams will be eligible for the playoffs, which will begin July 23 at the home arenas of the top-seeded teams.

"We are excited to give an opportunity to a majority of our teams," UIF executive director Dakota Crow said. "With three former national champions and five former conference champions, we are assured of having a great postseason and we feel that all 12 teams will make a run at a playoff berth."

Free-agent camp set: Tennessee Valley will host a free-agent camp on Saturday, Feb. 5 in the Von Braun Center's South Hall. There is a $40 fee for early registration and a late day-of fee of $50. For more information contact Adams at 256-551-3240 or 256-513-2956.

Tennessee Valley opens training camp March 1 and starts the season March 18 on the road against the Evansville Bluecats. The Pythons then travel to Ohio to face the Dayton Warbirds on April 2 before opening their home slate April 16 against the Tupelo Fireants. Kickoff at the VBC is set for 7:30 p.m.
