Pump Jacks Walk off over Marshals

July 2, 2014 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

The East Texas Pump Jacks had the usual home game Tuesday night at Historic Driller Park. And by "usual," the Jacks mean a comeback late in the game, the edge-of-your-seat drama of extra innings, followed by the excitement of a walk-off victory in front of the home fans.

Tuesday night it was Raymond Pedrina who was mobbed by his teammates after driving in the game-winner in the tenth inning to give the Pump Jacks a 5-4 victory over the Texas Marshals.

Last Thursday, Pedrina raced home on a Connor Hornsby single in the eleventh, upending the catcher to seal an extra-inning win over the Brazos Valley Bombers. On Tuesday, it was Pedrina who delivered with the bat in his hands, lining a two-out single that scored Connor Huesers.

It was the fifth time the Jacks have won in extra innings at home, and their sixth victory in eight games that have gone to extra frames.

The game looked like it would be a close one from the start. The Marshals scored one in the top of the first, and the Pump Jacks evened the score in the home half of the inning. Matthew Dickey led off with a single and took second on a sacrifice. Joe Moroney was hit by a pitch, and Dustin Williams drove in Dickey with an RBI single.

Texas scored two more in the third to take a 3-1 lead, but the Jacks answered back again with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Moroney picked up a two-out single, and Williams drove him in with a double sliced down the right field line.

The Marshals extended their lead to 4-2 in the fifth with their second solo home run of the game.

East Texas waited until the eighth inning before bringing the drama. Moroney once again was in the mix, walking to lead off and stealing second. Two outs later, Pedrina's bouncer to second was mishandled, scoring Moroney and putting the tying run on base. Pedrina stole second and took third on an error by the pitcher, then scampered home to tie the game on a passed ball.

Both teams put the potential winning run on base in the ninth but couldn't drive him in, sending the game into extra innings.

In the tenth, Williams picked up a one-out single, his third hit of the night. He was erased on a Hueser's fielder's choice. Huesers stole second to put himself in scoring position for Pedrina, who answered the call with the game-winning base hit to left field.

It was no surprise to see Kyle Garvin pitch in an extra-inning game, but his role Tuesday was quite different. Garvin, who had relieved in all nine appearances this season and picked up two extra-inning wins out of the bullpen, made his first start of the season against the Marshals. He was effective over 6.1 innings, allowing four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

John Jaeger came on for Garvin in the seventh and earned his first win of the season. Jaeger pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six.

Williams was the offensive leader on the night with three hits and two RBI. Moroney added two hits and two runs scored, and James Lear reached base twice with a hit and a walk.

The Jacks face the Marshals again on Wednesday night at Driller Park in the second Dollar Dog Night of the series. In celebration of National Hot Dog Month, all regular hot dogs are just one dollar on Wednesday, all night long!
