Pump Jacks Split Series against Acadiana

June 15, 2013 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

In the first doubleheader of the season, the Pump Jacks shut out the Cane Cutters in game one, but were unable to get the offense started in game two.

The East Texas Pump Jacks rode the arm of Nick Rossetta and the power bat of J.J. Robinson to a 2-0 shutout in the first game of Friday's doubleheader at the Acadiana Cane Cutters. Acadiana retaliated with a 10-0 shutout of the Pump Jacks in the nightcap.

Rossetta started on the mound for the first game and he was lights out, pitching the first complete game shutout of the season for the Pump Jacks. Rosetta dominated the Cane Cutters, only allowing four hits while striking out four in seven innings. With the win Rossetta improved his record to 2-0, making him the first Pump Jack to post multiple wins this season.

J.J Robinson scored the only runs of the game in the top of the fourth thanks to a huge two-run blast to right field. Robinson got behind in the count, but after fouling off three straight pitches, he crushed a 2-2 offering for his first home run of the season. The round-tripper scored Garrett McMullen, who had singled earlier in the inning, to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead. After that, Rossetta did the rest.

Game two did not go in the Pump Jacks favor, as they fell 10-0 in the nightcap. Errors and cool bats proved to be the downfall of the Pump Jacks, leaving them with a series split in their second visit to Acadiana in less than a week.

Unlike game one, the Cane Cutters opened up the scoring right away. After benefiting from an unearned run in the first inning, they then added four more tallies in the third. Starting pitcher Dillon Moritz got into trouble when he found himself in a bases-loaded, no-out jam after allowing three singles in a row. All three runners would cross home thanks to a sacrifice fly then a triple from Connor Barron. Barron was driven home two batters later to score the final run of the inning and give Acadiana a 5-0 lead.

Acadiana tacked on another run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to pull away from the battling Pump Jacks. The final runs came in the sixth thanks to a two-run double and another sacrifice fly to push the score to its final margin.

The Pump Jacks threatened in the top of the seventh when Joey Armstrong led off the inning with a single and McMullen reached on an error. Both runners were moved into scoring position on a groundout by Devon Conley, but they were stranded to end the game.

Armstrong finished the game 2-for-3, and Brooks Marlow added two hits of his own to wrap up the four hits of the game for the Pump Jacks.

The Pump Jacks return to action Saturday night when they welcome the Texas Marshals to town for the weekend series. Saturday will be the first giveaway of the season at historic Driller Park, where the Pump Jacks will be giving away free soft-core logo baseballs featuring the mark of the 2013 TCL All-Star Game. The first 100 fans in the gate will receive a free baseball.

Sunday is the first Pump Jacks Sunday Fun Day of the season, presented by theGOspot.com. Join the fiesta at the ballpark, featuring $2.50 chips and salsa and $2.50 frozen margaritas and Bud Light Lime Straw-ber-ritas.
