East Texas PumpJacks News Release
The Pump Jacks earn their second shut out in as many nights behind quality pitching and timely hitting.
The East Texas Pump Jacks rode the coattails of five pitchers as they shut out the Texas Marshals in game one of a two-game series Saturday night at Driller Park.
It was great pitchers duel, with each team putting up zeros through the first six innings, but the Pump Jacks came out on top thanks to timely hitting and defensive miscues by the Texas Marshals.
The new additions arrived just in time to bolster the Pump Jacks bullpen. A combination of five pitchers put up nine scoreless innings while only allowing three hits and striking out eight batters to blank the Marshals.
In his second outing, the 6'8 Hoosier out of Indiana University, Jacob Kelzer, got the start on the mound for East Texas. Kelzer pitched two hitless innings for the Jacks to open up the game, while striking out a batter. The game also featured the debut of three new pitchers arriving in Kilgore: Riley Toler, Don Sullivan, and J.J. Franklin. Toler, a Kilgore native, toed the mound after Kelzer and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two hits while also striking out two batters.
Sullivan earned the win for the Pump Jacks in his debut. He entered the game in the fifth with a runner on third and two outs and was able to get the final on a groundball to the second basement Brooks Marlow and end the threat. Sullivan then retired the next six batters he faced in order while striking out two. Franklin relieved Sullivan and pitched an inning, striking out one Cutter.
Ty Marlow moved from the designated hitter role onto the mound to wrap up the game for the Jacks. Marlow got the final three outs of the game and retired two on strikeouts. The Pump Jacks bullpen retired 15 out of the last 16 batters including 13 in a row at one point.
Marshals starting pitcher, Matt Custred, kept the Pump Jacks quiet on the scoreboard in the early innings. Custred stranded six East Texas runners through the first three innings.
However, the Pump Jacks pushed on and broke the stalemate in the bottom of the seventh to drive home the first run of the game. Devon Conley led off the inning with a walk, and was then sacrificed to second on a bunt down the third base line by Matthew Dickey. A single from Wes Edrington put runners on the corners with only one out. Brooks Marlow drove home the run with a seeing-eye single between first and second.
The Jacks extended their lead in the bottom of the eighth, tacking on three more runs to widen the gap. Garrett McMullen opened the frame with a single to snap his hitless streak on the night. Joey Armstrong followed up with a sac bunt that was launched into center field on the throw to second by the pitcher trying to turn two. The bad throw resulted in runners on first and second for the Pump Jacks. Ryan Hope then dropped down a sacrifice bunt of his own, but the Marshals threw wide of the bag at first bringing home a run and putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Armstrong, now at third, crossed home for the second run of the inning on a wild pitch. Then Edrington chopped a single over the head of the third basemen for his first multi hit game of the year, driving home Hope from third and giving the Pump Jacks a 4-0 lead and eventually the game.
The Pump Jacks go for the sweep Sunday night in game two, kicking off at 7:05 p.m.
