East Texas PumpJacks News Release
Pumps Jacks offense rolls on adding nine runs to earn fourth win in a row.
A late start due to rain did not affect the East Texas Pump Jacks as they continued their winning streak with a 9-6 victory over the second place Victoria Generals Thursday night at historic Driller Park.
The last time the Pump Jacks and Generals faced off was in the 2012 TCL Championship, and tonight, not unlike last August, the result went in the Jacks favor. The offense burned on adding nine runs, giving them 48 runs in just six games.
The Pump Jacks knocked in their first runs of the game in the home half of the third. Number nine hitter, Matthew Dickey, led off the frame with a single straight up the middle. As the lineup rolled to the top of the order, Ty Marlow knocked a beautiful hit-and-run to move Dickey from first to third. Dickey crossed the plate to score the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Brooks Marlow, giving Brooks his seventh RBI of the young season. Brooks came home on a dropped fly ball off the bat of J.J. Robinson, giving the Pump Jacks a 2-0 lead. Then, with two runners in scoring position, Joey Armstrong legged out an infield single to drive home another run. Connor Bitzer helped out the rally, driving home the final run of the inning on a sacrifice to right, putting East Texas ahead 4-0.
The Generals answered back to close the gap the next inning on a two out two- run triple. The Jacks got two quick outs, but back-to-back singles put runners in place for the triple to bring Victoria within striking distance 4-2.
East Texas added two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Brooks Marlow led off with a single, and then advanced on a beautiful bunt single down the line from Garrett McMullen. Back-to-back singles from Robinson and Armstrong capped off the scoring in the inning as the Pump Jacks jumped to a 6-2 lead.
The Jacks followed up with some insurance runs the next inning. Dickey once again started the action with a single to lead off the inning, and then moved to second on a ground out by Ty Marlow. Dickey then took matters into his own hands by stealing third, his fifth of the season, and crossed the plate on a throwing error by the catcher. Armstrong continued his outstanding night with his fourth hit to drive home two more runs and give the Jacks a 9-2 advantage.
The Generals made the game interesting by adding four runs in the final three innings of the game, but were unable to overcome the Jacks. East Texas battled back with solid pitching and great defense to hold off and silence the threat.
Pump Jacks starting pitcher, Nick Rossetta, carried East Texas through 4.2 solid innings. Rossetta only allowed two runs on six hits and struck out four Generals. Ben Mordini rebounded after a couple of tough outings this season and earned the win. Mordini pitched 1.1 innings and struck out two batters without allowing anyone to reach base.
The Pump Jacks will look to complete their second sweep in a row Friday night against the Victoria Generals. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. The game also marks the return of Fireworks Friday, presented by Patterson Kilgore and CBS 19, to East Texas. After the game, the Pump Jacks will light up the night sky with a spectacular postgame fireworks show, set to a brand new soundtrack.
Pump Jacks alumni, Jason Jester will make his return to East Texas to throw out a ceremonial first pitch to kick off the night. Jester who last year obliterated the leagues saving records, was named the first summer collegiate baseball All-American.This season Jester was also the Texas A&M single season saves record holder.
