East Texas PumpJacks News Release
The Pump Jacks let the lead slip away and allow the Texas Marshals to earn the win in the tenth inning.
The first extra innings game of the season did not go in favor of the East Texas Pump Jacks, as they dropped a very close 3-2 game in ten innings against the Texas Marshals Sunday night at Driller Park.
The Marshals opened up the scoring in the top of the first. After a lead off single, a two-out single by Chabrielle Pizzarro brought across the first run.
Pump Jacks starting pitcher Austin Watson was able to limit the damage in the first, stranding Marshals at second and third. Watson's night was done after the fourth inning in a scheduled short start. He allowed only one run on three hits and struck out four, before giving way to Jordan Johnson.
The Jacks broke onto the board in the bottom of the fourth, adding two runs to take the lead away from the Marshals. With two outs, Joey Armstrong registered the first Pump Jacks hit of the night with a bloop single to right. He then advanced to second on a walk to new Pump Jack, Zach Jones. Devon Conley drove home Armstrong for the first run of the inning on another bloop single, this time just out of the outstretched glove of the centerfielder. Matthew Dickey then showed off his speed by beating out a chopper to short for an infield single to drive home Jones and give the Jacks a 2-1 advantage.
The Marshals answered back in the top of the sixth to bring the game back to a stalemate. Johnson got into a bit of trouble after allowing a lead off single and a walk. Johnson then gave up a double to Pizzarro for his second RBI of the game to knot the score at 2-2.
East Texas threatened to add more runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, but they were unable to get the runners home, leaving the bases juiced in both innings.
In the eighth, Brooks Marlow led off with a single. Then, after Ty Marlow was hit by a pitch, after a failed sac bunt, Garrett McMullen singled to left to load the bases full of Pump Jacks with one out. However, a 6-4-3 double play ended the inning and halted the charging East Texas offense.
In the final inning of regulation, Jones reached first on an error by the Marshals shortstop. Then, Dickey came up with one out and roped his second single of the night to put runners on first and second. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a pass ball, putting the Pump Jack faithful on their feet. With first base open, and the hot hitting Brooks Marlow at the plate, the Marshals intentionally walked one Marlow to load the bases with two outs for the elder Marlow. Ty put a good swing on the ball, but his slicing line drive down the line was caught by the Marshals right fielder Konnor Kyser to send the game into extras.
The Marshals took no time plating the first run in extra innings. With one out Konnor Kyser hit a double just over the glove of Dickey in left field. Kyser crossed home to score the deciding run of the game on a single from Marshals second basemen Jared Pruett.
East Texas has the night off on Monday, but then the boys hit the road for a two-game series against the second place Generals in Victoria.
