Pulaski River Turtles News Release

It was a battle for first place in the Appalachian League East division as Pulaski took on Burlington at Calfee Park Saturday night. The Royals ended up victorious edging ahead with a 6-2 win after a late-inning battle in the ninth including a towering home run from Jonathan McCray. Cody Hamlin was tagged with his first loss of the season to fall to a 1-1 record. He pitched for two innings allowing four runs on five hits while striking out two. Alex Massey picked up his first win of the season to improve to 1-1. He pitched for three innings allowing two hits while striking out four. Both teams will face off in game two of the series Sunday at 5 p.m.

It only took one pitch for the Royals to get on the board with Nicky Lopez hammering a ball out of Calfee Park to make it 1-0. The Yankees tied the game in the third after Welfrin Mateo doubled. He stole third before scoring on a wild pitch. Burlington pulled ahead once again in the fifth with McCray reaching all the way to third on a Pulaski throwing error. He was plated on a sac fly from Lopez.

However, the Yankees tied the game back up in the bottom of the sixth. Mateo hopped aboard with a drag bunt and moved to second on a ground out. A Royals throwing error allowed Wilkerman Garcia to reach putting runners on the corners. Mateo scored on a sac fly from Isiah Gilliam to tie the game at two.

It looked like extra innings were going to be needed until Burlington broke open the game with a four-run ninth including singles from Boo Vasquez, Chris Devito, and Michael Arroyo and a towering home run from McCray that landed in the front yard of the house just beyond the right-field wall to seal a 6-2 win.
