Princeton WhistlePigs News Release

Fans of Princeton Rays baseball and all members of the general public are invited to meet and welcome 2009 P-Rays' manager Jared Sandberg to Princeton, WV as part of a free reception on Thursday evening, February 5, 2009.

The welcoming reception will be held at Schell Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church of Princeton, located at 100 Center Street in Princeton from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. that evening. Brief remarks will be delivered at 7:35 p.m. There will be drawings for Rays' door prizes following the remarks segment of the program.

"It promises to be a fun evening for everybody. We have conducted these Princeton winter baseball get-togethers many times over my 18 years here and I know it gets everyone's motor revved up for summer baseball. Jared has been looking forward to this trip and getting back here to check out what will be his summer surroundings for 2009," commented P-Rays' General Manager Jim Holland, who added he is hoping for a big turnout for this event.

Fans are encouraged to add to the spirit of the event by attending wearing their P-Rays' colors, either past or present.

It will be Sandberg's first time back in Princeton as a member of the Princeton Rays since the conclusion of a 1997 season that saw him, as a hard hitting third baseman, lead the P-Rays to a 39-30 record while capturing Most Valuable Player honors for the Appalachian League for that season. He posted a .302 batting average here (81-for-268) while clubbing 17 homers and driving home a league-leading 68 runners. He also had 15 doubles and five triples as part of his 37 extra base hits on the season while also contributing a whopping 61 runs scored and stealing 12 bases. All of this took part on a powerful 1997 Princeton club that offensively averaged almost 7.5 runs per game scored.

Sandberg, a resident of Olympia, WA, saw three years of action (2001-2003) in the big leagues. His best MLB season was in 2002 when he hit 18 homers and had 54 RBI in 102 games to go along 21 doubles, 55 runs scored, and a .229 (82-for-258) batting average.

Persons needing more information on the Febraury 5 reception can do so by contacting the P-Rays front office either by e-mail at raysball@sunlitsurf.com or by telephone at (304) 487-2000.
