Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, GA, January 9 -- Another signing coup was announced today by Columbus Lions Head Coach Jason Gibson, as Adrian Cockfield, a prolific wide receiver who reeled in 203 catches for the arenafootball2 Columbus Wardogs in 2003-04, joined the World Indoor Football League team's 2007 roster.
Cockfield, a 5'10", 190-lb. native of Albany, GA and star at Albany State University, is a versatile player who also has been his team's leading kick returner and and a valuable defensive back in his four-year arena and indoor football career.
"Adrian brings a lot of arena experience to our team, which allows him to help some of our younger players grasp the game. That will make us better in the long run" said Gibson. "He runs great routes and understands the angles of indoor football. I hope Adrian can reproduce his numbers from 2004."
The popular "A.C." had a magnificent 2004 season in which he led af2 with 126 receptions covering 1,466 yards with 30 touchdowns, averaging almost eight catches and 92 yards per game. On top of that, he had 1,019 kick-return yards, rushed five times for 41 yards, and by filling in on defense, allowed former Shaw High School star Troy Bergeron to step in offensively and flourish as af2 Rookie of the Year.
In Cockfield's rookie season of 2003, he played 13 games, caught 77 passes for 724 yards and six touchdowns for Columbus before being traded late in the season to eventual league champion Tulsa.
In 2005, after the Wardogs ceased operations, Cockfield played offensively and defensively for af2's South Georgia Wildcats in their first year in his hometown. The 2006 season was divided between a brief stint with the Chattahoochee Valley Vipers of the American Indoor Football League and the Everett (Wash.) Hawks of af2, where he caught 12 passes for 150 yards and scored twice in five games. He also returned two kicks for 26 yards and had one interception return for 14 yards.
The Lions begin their first WIFL season February 26 at the Daytona Beach Thunder, with their home opener scheduled for March 10 or 11 (exact date and gametime soon to be finalized). Training camp begins February 5 at the Columbus Civic Center. Complete roster, team and league news, features and photos are available at www.columbuslions.net and www.wifl.us.
