Potomac Nationals News Release
Woodbridge, Va. - Bryan Pritz drove in four including a game-breaking three-run triple in the eighth inning to lead Wilmington to a 7-4 victory over Potomac in the first of a three-game series on Tuesday.
Pritz's big hit came with the score tied at three; he would score an insurance run as Jed Lowrie smacked a single to right-center five pitches later.
Early on, the Nationals owned the game, until the Blue Rocks got on base. Trey Webb hit a sacrifice fly in the third while Marvin Lowrance and Marcos Yepez reached on back-to-back RBI-fielder's choices to make it 3-0 in the fourth as starter Collin Balester was perfect after the first 12 batters he faced.
Then it came apart in the fifth on a lead off walk to Jeff Natale. Two outs and a wild pitch later, light-hitting Matt Kent hit his first home run of the season into the trees beyond the right-center field wall to get the 'Rocks within one.
Pritz doubled in the sixth to tie it as Balester would leave at the end of the inning unable to get a decision.
Chris Thompson threw a 1-2-3 seventh but then had the flood gates open in the eighth as he allowed his first four earned runs with the P-Nats in one-plus innings of work.
Alex Morales finished the eighth without any more damage and Thomas Wilson completed the ninth, striking out one.
The Nationals, trailing 7-3, would get a run back in the eighth when Marvin Lowrance reached on a fielding error by third baseman Andrew Pinckney that allowed Brandon Powell to score. It was one of three errors the Blue Rocks committed in the inning and one of four all night.
Lynchburg lost in the bottom of the ninth in their game with Kinston which means that the Nationals magic number to clinch the first-half championship is down to seven with five games remaining. Lynchburg has six remaining, including a doubleheader with Kinston on Wednesday.
The Nationals and Blue Rocks take the field at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday night for Military Appreciation Night. All active and retired military with ID will receive half price Reserved and Grandstand tickets. For more on Potomac Nationals tickets, call (703) 590-2311.
