Princeton Rays Sweep Mariners
June 30, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Pulaski Mariners News Release
The Mariners' struggles behind the plate continued as they finished out the series against the Princeton Rays. The final game of the series played out like the prior two, with a frustrating offensive performance as Princeton won 7-1.
Pulaski's starter, Zack Littell, pitched valiantly and battled through six innings-allowing three runs on four hits. He walked one batter and struck out six. Littell struggled at times; allowing a home run to centerfielder Thomas Milone in the first inning.
On any given start allowing three runs over six innings could easily net Littell a win, but his offense was unable to come through. The Mariners scored one run on seven hits, with the single run coming in the fifth inning. With runners on first and second, Gianfranco Wawoe grounded up the middle allowing Chase Nyman to score the Mariners' first and only run of the game.
Manager Rob Maummau expects the player's hard work to start paying off at the plate in the coming series.
"You're going to have times when the ball isn't falling in. The kid's are battling and trying hard, and we just have to continue working."
The absence of Nelson Ward and Wayne Taylor, the Mariners top two hitters did not aid them on Monday night. Taylor the Mariners leader in average and home runs had played the previous five games, and Ward is currently nursing an ailing foot.
An upcoming start by Daniel Missaki in the Bristol series provides a ray of hope of returning to winning ways for Pulaski. Missaki is the reigning Appalachian League Pitcher of the week. Missaki is 2-0 this season and has yet to allow a run in 15 innings of work.
"Missaki is a strike thrower, a competitor, and he can locate all of his pitches." Said Mummau. "Hopefully he can keep it going against Bristol."
Game one of the Bristol series will begin at 7:00 on Tuesday night at Historic Calfee Park.
