Pulaski Mariners News Release
Pulaski, VA- In a game that took seven hours and forty-eight minutes to finish, Princeton came out on top in the 23rd inning defeating Pulaski 12-9 marking the longest game in Historic Calfee Park History.
The bottom of the fourth provided the most production from the Mariners bats. LF Phillips Castillo led off the inning by smashing a double into deep center, C Tyler Marlette then followed up with an RBI single up the middle. Next batter Reggie Lawson kept the hits going, blasting his fifth homer of the year giving Pulaski the 5-3 lead.
In hindsight, Princeton's biggest break came in the top of the ninth after taking the lead 7-6. With two outs and runners on first and second, C Oscar Hernandez hit what should have been a routine pop-fly to 3B Felipe Burin, yet he lost his concentration letting the ball fall to the infield grass and the eighth Princeton run cross the plate.
Not to be outdone, Pulaski scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a walk and three singles by Pizzano, Henry, and Castillo sending the game into extras where the score would stay tied for 13 additional innings.
Pulaski had more than a few opportunities to win the game in extras to say the least. M's bats failed to capitalize on runners in scoring position during the 11th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 19th and 23rd innings. The most notable chance that slipped away came in the bottom of the 15th when they had SS Bryan Brito on third with one out and Manager Jose Moreno put on the squeeze. However, Felipe Burin popped the bunt in the air allowing Princeton's pitcher Pedro Silvestre to make the catch and double up Brito, extinguishing the threat.
Princeton sealed the deal in the 23rd on a throwing error by reliever Domingo Brazoban who fielded a bunt in a rush only to airmail the third baseman resulting in two Rays crossing the plate. Princeton went on to score two more runs in the top of the inning and held Pulaski to one run in the bottom obtaining their 23rd win of the season.
In an epic duel that featured 19 different pitchers taking the rubber at Calfee Park, M's relief pitchers Min-Sih Chen, Lars Huijer, Nolan Diaz, Ricardo Pereira, and Levi Dean all pieced together solid outings. Combined, they threw 17 1/3 innings giving up only six hits, two runs, nine walks, and striking out 15 Princeton batters.
WP: Kirsch (2-1) LP: Brazoban (0-2)
