August 26, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Austin Bold FC News Release
Austin, TX - Another quick turnaround for Austin Bold FC, as they travel west to take on Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC tonight at Weidner Field. Tonight's match is the only game away from Bold Stadium against a team not in Group D. Sporting Kansas City II will visit Austin later in the season to wrap up all nongroup matches for the 2020 USL Championship season. The Bold is coming off a 3-2 win against RGV FC Toros on Saturday night that saw them jump into a playoff spot for the first time in 2020. Watch tonight's match live on ESPN+!
Team of the Week
USL Championship revealed their Week 9 Team of the Week Presented by Cleer Audio on Tuesday, and Bold forward Ates Diouf was recognized for his performance against RGV FC Toros. Diouf's standout match saw the forward instrumental in all three goals, scoring twice and assisting the other. Not to be limited by just goalscoring, the twenty-year-old helped drive the offense with a 94.7% passing accuracy. Since joining during the league hiatus, Diouf has recorded three goals and three assists in an impressive start with The Bold. After Saturday's match, Diouf spoke on his performance. "It feels great to help the team win and, of course, to score two goals and get an assist as well. I'm growing and learning every game. We have great guys on the team. They make everything easy for me. I'm proud and happy to be part of this team."
From Chivas to Bold
Xavi Baez is getting another former goat in the locker room. Cristian Ortiz joined The Bold Familia from Mexican powerhouse Chivas de Guadalajara for the remainder of the 2020 USL Championship Season. The young playmaker made his debut last Saturday against RGV FC Toros, coming off the bench to replace Ates Diouf in the 67'. Ortiz joined Chivas in 2013, where he progressed through the club's U15, U17, and U20 youth teams. In 2019, Ortiz made five appearances while on loan with Ascenso MX club Atlético Zacatepec. The midfielder made his senior team debut, starting for Los Rojiblancos in 2020 in a Copa MX match against Dorados de Sinaloa. Ortiz was very clear what his goals are with The Bold. "I came to give my best effort and sacrifice. I want to win championships and be a benchmark for the team, always setting a good example. I have in mind to put The Bold at the top of the league together with the help of my teammates."
Switchbacks: A Work in Process
The Switchbacks are still evolving under head coach Alan Koch. Unfortunately for the Colorado club, they have to figure out their new team identity in a tricky Group C that contains three 2019 playoffs sides. The trouble in recent matches has been goals. Koch's men haven't found the back of the net in two consecutive matches and struggle to make concrete scoring chances. The Switchbacks registered 11 total shots, including block shots against New Mexico United and three against El Paso Locomotive FC, and sit tied 28th for shots in the USL Championship. The question is, who will take on the goalscoring duties? Currently, Uvaldo Luna leads the team with two goals, with six other players providing single goals. The roster turnover between seasons may have caused some issues. Only one of their top three goalscorers from 2019 has returned, Jordan Burnt. Shane Malcolm is no longer with the club, and Ismaila Jome is now with The Bold. Marcelo Serrano will hope to exploit this in tonight's match.
