ORLANDO - The Olympia High School football team has pieced together the most successful season in its 11-year history with the help of Orlando Predators quarterback Collin Drafts.
Olympia, where current NFL running back Chris Johnson and Preds wide receiver Maurice Price once prepped, won its first district title and first postseason game with Drafts calling the shots as the team's offensive coordinator.
On Friday, Drafts and Olympia hosts Timber Creek in the second round of the Class 8A playoffs. Both Orange County schools opened in 2001 and won playoff games for the first time last week.
Olympia defeated Timber Creek 26-22 earlier in the season.
"It's been an unbelievable opportunity," Drafts said of coaching at the high school level. "I've put my heart and soul into this and have been able to install my own flair into the offense along the way."
With a sophomore quarterback under center to lead a versatile offense featuring John Armstrong, the team's leading rusher and receiver, Olympia (7-5) finished district play with a 4-0 mark and is averaging 333 yards and 22.3 points per game.
"He's a great football mind with a lot of knowledge and has helped us put points on the scoreboard," Olympia head coach Bob Head said. "He brings great enthusiasm to the team. The kids instantly respected him and looked up to him once he joined the staff."
Head and Drafts are teaming up for the second time in their football careers.
Head served as defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at Georgia Southern during Drafts' freshman and sophomore seasons. Once Drafts signed on with the Predators for 2011, he joined the Titans as quarterback coach during spring practices.
Drafts was later promoted to offensive coordinator following the third week of the regular season. He's produced in his new role much in the same way he did while coming off the bench the past two Arena Football League seasons in Dallas and Orlando.
"Just like in a game, when your number is called upon you get out there and try to make the most of the shot you're given," Drafts said.
And he's been doing just that.
