Preds Cut 11 On Friday
February 22, 2008 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Orlando Predators News Release
Orlando, FL- With the start of the Arena Football League season just around the corner, the Orlando Predators made 11 cuts on Friday to get down to 27 active players. The biggest surprise is the release of K Jay Taylor who spent four seasons with the team. Taking over for Taylor will be former Auburn standout John Vaughn.
Preds assistant head coach Les Moss says releasing Taylor was a tough decision.
"Anytime you release a player that's been with your team for a few years and has done a great job for you, it's tough. But players come to training camp, they compete for jobs and it was a tough competition," said Moss. "We felt John did a better job with the opportunities he had than Jay."
Also on the list is LB A.J. Nicholson, who joined the team from the Cincinnati Bengals after a successful career at Florida State University. Wide receivers Henry Tolbert, Roosevelt Kiser, and Steve Gonzalez were released, leaving the Preds with four players at the position. At the line positions the Preds cut OL Joe Johnson, Theodric Watson, and Qasim Mitchell. DL Jeremy Pittman was also let go on Friday.
Quarterback Andy Hall was released just as Jake Eaton was activated from Injured Reserve after sitting out with a sore calf muscle. In the defensive backfield, Dion Byrum was cut.
The Predators will hold an inter-squad scrimmage Saturday morning at 10:30 during the season ticket holder pick up party at Thunder Field with media availability immediately following the scrimmage.
