AFL season begins in seven days
February 22, 2008 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK - The Arena Football League's 22nd season officially kicks off in seven days when the Los Angeles Avengers welcome the New Orleans VooDoo to the STAPLES Center at 10:30 p.m. ET on Friday, February 29.
The Avengers are 3-1 all-time in Week 1 home openers and look to get off to a good start after notching the team's first playoff victory in 2007.
"We're very excited about being the team that hosts the first game of the AFL season," said Avengers head coach ED HODGKISS. "It's great to kick things off at home. Building off our success last season, I am expecting a lot from our players and staff this season. We not only are looking for a fast start, but a winning middle, and a great finish."
The New Orleans VooDoo hope to rebound and keep pace with the other members of the Mitsubishi Motors Southern Division after a fourth place finish in 2007.
"You just look at our division and it's not just Georgia, it's also Orlando and Tampa Bay," remarks VooDoo head coach MIKE NEU about the competitive Southern Division. "They were all playoff teams last season. Every single year you know they are all going to be very good. JAY GRUDEN in Orlando, TIM MARCUM in Tampa and DOUG PLANK in Georgia are all tremendous coaches. Every week in this league, whether it is in our division or outside of it, we will have our hands full and that's what makes every single day of training camp so important for us."
