DAYTON, Ohio - Tim Hartung scored as the seventh shooter in an International Hockey League shootout to give the Dayton Gems an 8-7 victory over the Bloomington PrairieThunder before 1,101 people Wednesday night at Hara Arena.
The PrairieThunder, which trailed by three goals twice, scored a season-high six goals in the third period to force overtime and the shootout. It was also the most goals scored by Bloomington in a game this season.
Jon Booras and Billy Bagron scored in the shootout for Bloomington, Corey Couturier and Pierce Norton had goals for Dayton before Hartung added the game-winner against losing goalie Andrew Martin.
Craig Macdonald, Jason Lepine, Zac Pearson and Brett Holmberg mssed opportunities to score in the shootout. Macdonald and Lepine's shots hit the post.
Dayton jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Jonathan Ornelas with 15:29 remaining before Booras knotted the score with a goal at the 9:24 mark of the second period. Matt Frick and Cole Ruwe had the assists.
Dayton then scored four straight goals for a 4-1 advantage with 18:53 left in the third period. Scoring goals for the Gems were Couturier and Norton in the second period and Joe VanCulin to start the third period.
The PrairieThunder then scored two straight goals to cut the deficit to 4-3. Travis Banga had the first score at the 18:30 mark on assists by Jamie Carroll and Macdonald. Bagron added another goal two minutes later on assists by Matthew Spiller and Lepine.
Couturier followed with a Dayton goal 43 seconds later before Norton added his second goal another 43 seconds later. Carroll then scored two straight goals to pull the PrairieThunder within 6-5 midway through the third period. Banga had two assists, while Chase Watson and Ruwe also had assists.
Holmberg tied the game at the 4:48 mark with a power goal off assists from Pearson and Bagron. A,J. MacLean gave Dayton a 7-6 advantage with an unassisted short-handed goal at the 3:10 mark.
Booras knotted the score 33 seconds later on a power play goal with assists by Ruwe and Carroll, setting the stage for the overtime and shootout.
Blomington owned a 44-30 advantage in shots and was successful on 2 of 3 power play attempts. It was a season-high in shots for the PrairieThunder. Dayton did not have a power play attempt. The PrairieThunder had five minutes in penalties to Dayton's 11.
The PrairieThunder has a 14-13-2-4 record and 34 points. Bloomington returns to action Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. contest against Fort Wayne at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
