
PrairieThunder can't stop Quad City

BLOOMINGTON, Ill - Quad City forward Luke Stauffacher notched a hat trick and scored four points to lead the Mallards to a 7-6 Western Conference victory over the Bloomington PrairieThunder in United Hockey League action before 3,517 people Sunday at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
Stauffacher scored his first goal 5:11 into the first period after Bloomington had taken a 2-0 lead. Justin Chwedoruk and Nick Harloff had assists. Chwedoruk also added a goal and two more assists later in the game as the Mallards improved their record to 16-16-4.
Bloomington, which saw its record dip to 11-25-2, took its 2-0 advantage on goals by Mike Zbriger, his first as a PrairieThunder, and Jon Booras in the first 4:47 of the game. Andrew Lackner had the assist on Zbriger's goal, while Zbriger had the assist on Booras' goal.
B.J. Gaustad increased the Bloomington advantage to 3-1 with a goal on assists by Shawn Roed and John Spoltore at the 13:50 mark. The Mallards tied the score with two quick goals by Blake Stewart and Matt Radoslovich.
Quad City took a 6-3 lead on two goals by Stauffacher and Don Parsons. Chwedoruk had an assist on each goal and Jami Yoder added another assist on Parsons' score.
But the PrairieThunder retaliated with three straight goals to forge a 6-all deadlock. Scoring for Bloomington were Zbriger on a power play with assists from Tyler Rennette and Alex Goupil.
Shawn Roed added an unassisted goal 40 seconds later at the 9:20 mark and Jarad Bourassa scored on an unassisted power play.
Chwedoruk scored the game-winning goal with 10:51 left in the third period. Steffan Braunlich, who replaced Jeff Reynaert in the net in the second period, took the loss. Reynaert had 25 saves on 30 shots and Braunlich 20 saves on 22 attempts.
The Mallards had a 52-29 shot advantage. The PrairieThunder was successful on two of seven power plays, while Quad City was shut out on five power plays.
The PrairieThunder returns to action Friday with a 7:30 p.m. game in Chicago, which begins a three-game road trip.
The UHL All-Star Classic is Wednesday in Fort Wayne. The PrairieThunder will be represented by Lackner and Goupil.
