Powless, Green in Ontario Finals
July 30, 2014 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release
Rochester Knighthawks Johnny Powless and Wenster Green are in the midst of another playoff run. After winning the National Lacrosse League's Champion's Cup in May, the Knighthawks players are preparing for the Junior "A" Ontario Finals with the Six Nations Arrows.
"It feels good," said Powless. "We are one step closer to where we want to be."
The Arrows advanced to the finals Monday night, following a 9-7 victory over the Peterborough Lakers in Game Six of the Ontario Semifinals. The win was the third straight for the Arrows, who erased a 2-1 series deficit. Powless led Six Nations back to the Ontario Finals with a seven-point effort (2+5), as the Arrows won four games to two. Green chipped in two assists to give him seven points in the series.
"It's really exciting. I am definitely happy for the team. We have a lot of experience because we came so close last year," said Green, who was one win away from capturing the Ontario Championship in 2013. "Hopefully, we can get out of Ontario, make it to the Minto Cup and win it."
Six Nations earned a trip to the Finals with two unanswered goals midway through the third period. With the game tied at seven, Powless scored the game-winning goal at 11:18 of the third period. He then assisted in Ian Martin's goal at 13:02.
It was an impressive performance from the NLL star. Powless opened the game by setting up two of the first three Six Nations' goals, as the Arrows jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first. In the second period, Powless helped the Arrows regain the lead, 5-4, with his first of the contest, which followed a 4-1 Lakers' run.
In the third, Peterborough evened the contest at five just 45 seconds into the final frame. The Arrows, however, responded with a pair of goals to move in front 7-5. Powless set up Haodais (Joseph) Maracle at 1:35 and then hit Shane Simpson at 3:15. Simpson did the rest as he beat two defenders to score his second of the night. After the Lakers responded with two goals of their own, Powless went to work with a goal and an assist to give the Arrows the win at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
Since returning to the team for the postseason, Powless has led the Arrows and the Junior "A" Playoffs with 42 points (15+27) in nine games. In the hard-fought series against Peterborough, he registered 11 goals and 20 assists in just six games.
This season in the NLL, the 21-year-old Powless reached career highs in goals (30) and points (53). He also won his third straight Champion's Cup, while 20-year-old Wenster Green won his first NLL Championship. Both players are focused on ending their junior careers with a Minto Cup title.
"It feels great to be back in the Ontario Finals," said Green. "This is my last year of junior lacrosse. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to be able to get the Minto Cup."
"It would be a dream come true," added Powless. "I have been going after it for five years."
Six Nations will play the Whitby Warriors in Game One of the Ontario Finals on Thursday, July 31st at 8:00 p.m. at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.
