Power's Washington Named Week 3 National Guard Community MVP
March 23, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release
CHICAGO - Pittsburgh Power WR MIKE WASHINGTON has been named National Guard Community MVP of the Week for his recent efforts philanthropic efforts.
Washington (5-8, 175, Hawaii) has returned for his second season with the Power. Washington has volunteered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, March of Dimes, and local Children's Hospitals.
One of Washington's favorite philanthropic experiences came last May when 10-year-old Michael Walsh's wish was to become a member of the Pittsburgh Power.
"Being a professional athlete in Pittsburgh you have the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers and it's hard to compete with those three with such a rich history here in Pittsburgh," Washington said. "But Mick Walsh said his favorite player was Mike Washington of the Pittsburgh Power. He signed a one-week contract, came out and practiced with us and he wore my number 1 jersey - that captured my heart right there."
Washington has volunteered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation a handful of times and says that aside from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, his other favorite foundation is Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
"It gives me the chance to be a mentor and direct these kids in the right path," Washington said.
Recently, Washington visited a young fan at a local Children's Hospital and made an immediate connection.
"This boy Christian was unable to speak - but he had a strong arm on him. We went outside tossed the ball around, did a couple touchdown dances - I really enjoyed that," Washington said.
Washington hopes to organize a Pittsburgh Power barbeque for the community this summer.
"I'm always looking for ways and different avenues to try to bring about love and compassion for one another," Washington said.
The Power (1-0) square off against the Philadelphia Soul (1-0) tonight on "NET10 Arena Football Friday" on NFL Network at 8:00 pm ET.
The National Guard Community MVP is awarded to one player each week to recognize their commitment to community service. Following the 2012 season, players will be voted on by fans to become the National Guard Community MVP of the Year.
