New York Power News Release

Rochester, NY - The New York Power and Washington Freedom played to a 2-2 tie in an exhibition match on a rainy day in Rochester, NY.

The Power tallied first in the 13th minute, when Shannon Boxx connected on a 23-yard free kick after forward Tammy Pearman was taken down by the Freedom defense.

The Freedom answered back in the 22nd minute when hometown hero Abby Wambach finished a feed from Mia Hamm. Hamm raced up the left sideline, putting a beautiful cross into the box to a streaking Wambach who finished the play.

Eleven minutes later, Lori Lindsey gave the Freedom a one-goal lead when she drove a hard shot past a diving Saskia Webber. Hamm collected her second assist on the evening as she again moved up the left sideline and found Lindsey open at the top of the penalty box.

In the second half the play went back and forth, until second half sub Christie Welsh tied the game in the 77th minute on a shot from outside Washington's penalty area. Welsh collected the ball and slammed a left-footed shot past Freedom goalkeeper Nicci Wright.

Emily Janss almost won the game in stoppage time, but her shot hit the outside of the right netting. Power midfielder Joey Peters got tangled up with Wright and a bouncing ball came to Welsh who turned and pushed her shot off the mark to the left of the goal. Janss caught up to the ball before it hit the end line, but wasn't able to get a shot on goal.

The Power return to WUSA action, when they face Brandi Chastain and the San Jose CyberRays on June 8 at 6:00 EST. It will be the first time that Power head coach Tom Sermanni will face his old team. Sermanni served as San Jose's assistant coach for the past two seasons before coming over to the Power.
