Power Plays Push IceGators Past Thunder

LAFAYETTE, La. - The Bloomington Thunder gave up three power play goals and fell 5-2 to the Louisiana IceGators on Saturday night at the Cajundome.

The Thunder scored first just 3:55 into the game on a short rebound by Patrick Schafer on assists from Paul Arnott and Tyler Noseworthy, but the IceGators tied the game 8:09 in and just nine seconds into the game's first power play on a Tyler Lyon rebound goal to send the game to the first intermission even at 1-1.

The Gators capitalized on another power play with 17:45 remaining in the second period on Shawn McNeil's drive from the high slot. The Gators increased the advantage to 3-1 with 12:18 left in the middle period on a delayed penalty when Adam Stuart punched the puck past a stickless Thunder goalie Max Strang. The Thunder closed the margin to 3-2 with 1:29 before the second intermission on a Travis Granbois tally from the slot assisted by Burke Gallimore and Dan Barczuk.

Louisiana earned their third power play goal on a conversion of a centering pass right on the doorstep for Chris Wilson exactly one minute into the third period for a 4-2 lead. The Gators sealed the win with an empty net goal with 1:35 remaining by Adam Stuart.

The IceGators were 3-of-9 on the power play while the Thunder did not convert any of three chances. The Gators outshot the Thunder 35-29 with Matt Zenzola earning the win in goal with 27 stops while Max Strang made 30 saves in the loss.

Junior Blaze win: After an 8-7 victory on Friday, the Bloomington Junior Blaze continued their winning ways over the Berkley Bruins by a 4-3 score in a shootout on Saturday in Midwest Junior Hockey League play in suburban Detroit. Dylan Farmer, Duncan Irving and Micah Young scored in regulation for Bloomington while Jorey Skelton converted the only shootout goal. The teams conclude their weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Berkley Ice Arena.
