Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

TORONTO, ON – The trio of power-play goals that the Toronto St. Michael's Majors scored against the Sudbury Wolves this afternoon proved to be the difference. The Majors held a 4-0 lead early in the 2nd period and watched the Wolves slowly chip away, but were able to hold on for a 4-3 win.

The Majors power-play goals came at 8:15, 13:23 and 17:24 of the opening frame, off the sticks of Darryl Boyce, Matt Halischuk and Craig Montgomery, respectively. The assists were provided by Ryan Wilson (2), Scott Lehman, Justin DiBenedetto, Cory Vitarelli and Travis Elder. Then, Jamie Vanderveeken stretched it to a 4-goal lead 23 seconds into the 2nd period with a slap shot from the top of the circle, through a defenceman's legs. This time, the helpers were credited to Boyce and Nathan McIver.

However, the Wolves began to find their game. Stefan Blaho got them on the board at 6:11 of the middle frame, on the power-play, off of Nick Foligno and Bobby Chaumont feeds. Then, Kyle Lamb got them within two at 7:29 of the 3rd period with the assists going to Foligno and Benoit Pouliot. And, Chaumont brought them to within one when he scored with 12 seconds to play. Ryan McDonough got the lone assist. The Wolves even had a goal disallowed with 3 seconds to go in the game.

Justin Peters was in net for the Majors once again and made 20 saves for the win. Kevin Beech started for the Wolves but was pulled after allowing four goals on 10 shots and was replaced by Patrick Ehelechner, who turned aside 11. The chippy play these teams exhibited during their 1st round series last year, carried over to this season, as 90 minutes in penalties were called. The Majors ended up 3 for 12 on the power-play while the Wolves were 1 for 7. The game's three stars were Boyce (1st), Wilson (2nd) and Foligno (3rd).

The Majors record now sits at 3-1-2-1. They will travel to Brampton to face the Battalion tomorrow afternoon, at 2:00 pm, before welcoming the Mississauga IceDogs on Thursday evening, October 14th, at 7:30 pm. They will then visit the IceDogs on Friday evening (October 15th) at 7:30 pm before coming home to host the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday, October 17th at 2:00 pm.
